THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Biological Sciences offers B.S., B.A., and Master’s degree programs as well as a Biotechnology Certificate program. The department has approximately 800 majors, 50 Master’s students, 15 tenure-track faculty and 7 staff. Resources available in the department include an insectary, greenhouse facilities, a natural history collections room and a newly renovated molecular biology core facility that includes next-generation sequencing technologies and a confocal microscope, cell culture facility, and a BSL-2 laboratory. In addition, access to a new, shared IACUC-approved small animal care facility housed within the College of Science, and the Cleary Reserve (http://clearyreserve.com/), a 174 ha reserve in Napa County is available. The B.S. in Biological Sciences includes a rigorous core sequence in biological sciences, including courses in chemistry, physics, selected mathematics and statistics courses. Within the B.S. degree, students can select a concentration in Physiology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Biomedical Lab Sciences, and Forensic Science. Courses for biology majors are offered at the Hayward Hills and Concord campuses as well as at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (https://www.mlml.calstate.edu/) , a seven-CSU campus consortium of which Cal State East Bay is a member. Additionally, the department offers a B.A. in Biological Sciences with concentration in Biology Education designed to prepare students careers in secondary science education.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The Department of Biological Sciences, California State University, East Bay (CSUEB) seeks to fill a tenure-track position in Microbiology at the level of Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2023. We seek dynamic teacher-scholars who can demonstrate sustained commitment to working with diverse student learners, instructional best practices, and the development of a student-centered, externally funded research program in a culturally diverse community. The candidates will be expected to teach existing undergraduate majors’ courses including one or more of the following: General Microbiology, Medical Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology, Microbe-Host Interaction, Parasitology, Microbial Ecology, Molecular Microbiology, Microbial Physiology and Metabolism, Immunology and Virology. In addition, the candidates will be expected to develop upper division undergraduate and Master's-level courses in their area of specialization. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay may include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses. The policy and expectation of the California State University is that tenure-track faculty members will perform their duties within the state of California. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

The salary schedule information for the Instructional Faculty - Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:

Instructional Faculty AY ( Range 2 ) - $4,530 – $6,056

Instructional Faculty AY ( Range 3 ) - $5,405 – $11,994

Instructional Faculty AY ( Range 4 ) - $6,190 – $13,172

Instructional Faculty AY ( Range 5 ) - $7,794 – $13,797

The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Semester, 2023

QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in biology or related field and postdoctoral experience are required with teaching experience preferred. Candidates should demonstrate experience in teaching, mentoring, research, or community service that has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.
