Kenyon College invites applications for the position of Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has specific responsibility for (1) the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive student development program for under-represented students, and (2) the promotion and enhancement of the campus community’s understanding of and appreciation for diverse cultures, heritages, orientations, and backgrounds. The Director is a key member of the Kenyon College Student Affairs team and reports directly to the Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Strategic Engagement. In cooperation with other Student Affairs staff members, he or she shares an awareness of and concern for all aspects of each student’s classroom, residential, and co- curricular life. The Director also provides direct assistance to the Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Strategic Engagement in support of the various services and programs of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Division of Student Affairs of the College.
Responsibilities
● Serve as an advisor to under-represented student groups and
campus organizations that address the issues of diversity,
equity and inclusion concerns.
● Advise the ODEI and the College on issues pertaining to the
overall experiences of first-generation students. Design and
implement programs and services for first-generation students
that address issues of recruitment, retention, and support.
● Serve as an advisor to under-represented students concerning
postgraduate awards and opportunities.
● Participate in admissions receptions and visitation days.
● Develop a mentoring program focusing on the academic, career, and
personal development of under-represented students, matching
students with volunteer mentors from the community, the
campus, the alumni body, or other similar groups.
● Serve as the Administrative Representative to the Great Lakes
Colleges Association Committee for Institutional Commitment
for Educational Equity.
● Attend national and regional conferences to stay abreast of best
practices and trends in serving under-represented student
populations.
● Develop and administer programs with and for all students and
other members of the College community that emphasize: an
awareness and celebration of cultural and ethnic differences;
self-assessment of possible prejudices; and developing greater
acceptance, understanding, and ability to relate to others.
The Director will work closely with students, faculty, staff
in other Student Affairs offices (e.g., Dean of Diversity,
Equity, Inclusion and Strategic Engagement, Dean of Student
Development, Center for Global Engagement, Student Engagement,
Career Development, Cox Center for Health and Counseling
Services, Athletics and Residential Life), and other College
personnel in fulfilling this responsibility.
● Work closely with the Director of New Student Orientation and
Community Programs to develop an orientation program for new
students that emphasizes the College’s coordinated efforts to
promote multicultural awareness, understanding, and
sensitivity. In particular, assume responsibility for those
aspects of the New Student Orientation Program directly
related to under-represented students and issues of diversity.
Provide support to members of the faculty as they undertake
their advising and teaching roles with students from
under-represented groups.
● Assist in coordinating the Knox County Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Celebration
● Work with other members of the Student Affairs Division to
implement on-going training programs for student staff
members, (e.g., Community Advisors, House Managers)
that heightens awareness relative to the needs and concerns of
under-represented students.
● Serve as the Administrative Liaison to the Board of Spiritual and
Religious Life.
● Assist the Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Strategic
Engagement with special projects and responsibilities within
the Student Affairs Division of the College.
● Attend scheduled Student Affairs Division meetings and
events.
● Participate in the Student Affairs Division “on-call”
schedule.
● Advise students placed on academic conditional enrollment;
● Serve on College and Student Affairs Division search and ad hoc
committees as appointed
● Provide sound financial management for the Office of Diversity,
Equity and Inclusion, including the authorization of all
department expenditures, evaluation and presentation of
department needs that have budgetary implications, and preparation
of department budget proposals as requested by the Dean of
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Strategic Engagement.
● Provide the Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Strategic
Engagement with a year-end report and other reports as
requested.
● Conduct other duties as assigned by the Dean of Diversity,
Equity, Inclusion and Strategic Engagement.

- Be extremely dependable and able to work well as part of a collaborative team
- Have excellent written, oral and listening skills

Supervisory Responsibilities
The following positions report directly to the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion:
- Assistant/Associate Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for LGBTQIA+ Resources
- Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
- Administrative Assistant for the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Working Conditions
Majority of work is performed in office space and other campus
facilities. The ability to work on weekends and evenings is
required. Transporting students in College vehicles is highly
likely and will require certification as a driver through the
Office of Campus Safety. Responsibilities also include
traveling with students to functions away from Gambier, including
states where GLCA schools are located, as well as other
states.
Minimum Qualifications
A Master’s Degree plus 4-7 years of full time experience is
required in this role. The Director of Diversity, Equity and
Inclusion must have an appreciation for the value of a liberal
arts education, a love of learning, a high degree of energy
and enthusiasm, and the ability to work independently. The
ability to develop and implement new programs is also essential. In
this position, you must be sensitive to the academic and
personal development of young adults in a higher education
setting. Experience working with under-represented students and
related programs is important, as are strong communication,
counseling, and organizational skills.
