Position Purpose

Under general supervision, performs minor maintenance and repair (electrical, plumbing, carpentry & painting) in College General Plant Operation ( GPO ) properties. Performs work as directed by Facilities Operations & Management Supervision for assigned buildings. Regularly inspects buildings and prepares work orders for necessary repairs.

High School plus 3+ years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Minimum two years of relevant experience in general building maintenance, or the equivalent.
  • A valid driver’s license is required, and ability to qualify under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others, have good communication skills and be dependable.
  • High School graduate, or the equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be willing to complete the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates: Driver Safety; Hazard Communication; Lock-out/tag-out; Personal Protective Equipment (including respirator training, N95 fit test and Physical Examination); Asbestos Awareness

Key Accountabilities

Description

Maintenance Work
  • Performs minor repairs and maintenance in College General Plant Operation ( GPO ) buildings. Communicates directly with occupants, who may be inconvenienced or affected by scheduled work.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to pick up supplies required for the maintenance of properties located throughout Hanover and the surrounding area.
  • Repairs sticking doors, replaces hardware (locks, handles, door knobs, etc.), and performs minor carpentry work; planes and sands wood surfaces and touches up painted areas with brush or spray paint.
  • Repairs broken light fixtures (i.e. light lenses) and replaces switch and receptacle plates and other simple electrical fixtures and devices. Replaces light bulbs / relamps fixtures as needed.
  • Repairs leaking faucets and toilets and replaces gaskets, filters, and other simple plumbing fixture assemblies. Plunges clogged toilets, snakes clogged drain lines.
  • Changes air filters in terminal devices such as fan powered VAV boxes and heat pump units.
  • Responds to temperature complaints checking temperature and ensuring proper operation of thermostats and terminal devices. Refers significant repairs to the Shop Supervisor for follow up by other staff.
  • May assist other maintenance workers and technicians with repairs that require additional labor.
  • Observes and reports in a timely manner any defects, deterioration, and wear and tear on buildings; orally communicates emergencies or describes trade work that involves major repairs to the Shop Supervisor for input into the work order system.
  • Inspects assigned facilities on a regular basis for any necessary repairs, and to ensure that previously reported deficiencies have been corrected.
  • As needed, oversees the work performed by outside contractors.
