The Animal Science major within the College of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences has experienced considerable enrollment growth, serving over 800 students. Enrollment in the emphases is ranked in decreasing order: companion animal, equine, meat animal, dairy, veterinary technology, and food science. The Department of Animal and Food Science is seeking a nine-month, full-time academic, tenure-track undergraduate faculty position (100% teaching) at the rank of Assistant Professor. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong interests and ability to teach undergraduate animal nutrition courses. Other teaching opportunities may include courses in the core animal science curriculum such as biochemistry, statistics, microbiology, or animal production, depending on departmental needs, the individual’s interest, educational background, and skill level. Opportunities exist for optional summer employment through teaching, research grants, internship supervision, and other funding sources. Appointment date: January 5, 2023, or August 21, 2023

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate courses in animal nutrition. Other teaching opportunities may include courses in the core animal science curriculum such as biochemistry, statistics, microbiology, or animal production, depending on departmental needs, the individual’s interest, educational background, and skill level. Additional responsibilities include academic advising to undergraduate students and advising to student organizations and clubs within the department. Active participation is expected in department-sponsored events such as the Academic Quadrathlon and judging contests or coaching competitive teams. The individual will also establish and maintain affiliations with animal groups or associations at the state, regional and national levels. After hiring, the individual must continue to advance their knowledge and level of expertise within the field of nutrition among multiple domestic animal species. The University requires participation in faculty governance and service activities at the departmental, college, and university levels. Faculty members are also expected to engage in scholarly activity, which is broadly defined as the scholarship of teaching, research, or similar activities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Qualifications (Required): The following items are required within potential candidates:
  • PhD or ADB in Animal Nutrition, Animal Science majoring in Animal Nutrition, or a closely related field at the time of appointment. ABD candidates may be considered for a conditional appointment and must complete their Ph.D. within one year of appointment date.
  • Professional priority for achieving excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • Interest in and demonstrated ability in teaching undergraduate courses in animal nutrition.
  • Strong interest in and ability to provide academic advising to undergraduate students.
  • Strong desire for active involvement in student organizations.
  • Well-developed and effective oral and written communication skills.
Qualifications (Preferred): The following attributes are highly desirable within potential candidates:
  • Experience, contacts, and involvement in North American animal industries.
  • Familiarity with applied feeding techniques, such as ration balancing and proficiency with ration software.
  • Education and experience in one of the following disciplines: ruminant nutrition, biochemistry, statistics, or microbiology.
  • Familiarity with multiple animal species within U.S. animal industries, including companionate species.
  • Documented evidence of successful teaching at the college level.
  • Interest in and ability to coach animal science teams and/or advise co-curricular activities such as student organizations, internships, and/or undergraduate research and global experiences.
