Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Western Michigan University (WMU) invites applications and nominations for the position of provost and vice president for academic affairs. Reporting to the president and serving as a member of the President’s Cabinet, the provost and vice president for academic affairs leads 10 colleges with more than 250 academic offerings. The provost currently oversees 4 associate provost reporting lines (Budget and Personnel, Enrollment Management, Global Education, and WMUx), Information Technology, University Libraries, and Academic Labor Relations.

WMU’s charge is to Rethink Smart, redefining success as we expand what it means to be smart in an ever-changing world. Our University seeks a bold thought leader and change agent who will work in concert with over 750 faculty and 1,000 staff in an environment designed to help our 19,000 students thrive academically, emotionally, and physically, and inspire students to pursue their purpose, prosper in meaningful careers, and make a meaningful impact on society.

The role of WMU’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs includes strengthening collaboration across university divisions; championing shared governance; allocating resources in a way that uses a modified Responsibility Center Management budget model to uphold core institutional values; implementing the University’s new strategic plan; enhancing the University’s reputation by rewarding innovative faculty research and teaching, meritorious student accolades, and notable staff accomplishments; seeking new sources of revenue to support both new and existing programs to enhance enrollment growth; and representing the University in a way that is, at all times, authentically aligned with its core values.

A thriving and prosperous division of academic affairs is predicated upon student success and faculty achievement. WMU’s historic $550 million Empowering Futures Gift—the largest gift for a public institution of higher education in U.S. history—is set to enhance the prosperity of academic affairs by offering significant new scholarships, paid internship opportunities, and making possible numerous student-centered initiatives. The gift will also fund new and diverse faculty hires and bolster interdisciplinary research projects.

Professional Qualifications and Personal Qualities

The successful candidate must possess an earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree in an academic discipline and have a record of successful, progressive, and entrepreneurial leadership in a university setting with proven commitment to academic excellence across the areas of teaching, research, and creative scholarship.

The provost and vice president for academic affairs must have a history of increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion among students, faculty and staff, particularly in the areas of recruitment and retention and have a demonstrated ability to implement strategies to positively impact enrollment for all students. To that end, the ideal candidate will have the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics: professional academic experience, established capacity for managing financial resources, complex budgets, and personnel, exceptional communication skills, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
