The Biomedical Sciences Program (https://www.highpoint.edu/biomedical-science/) in the Congdon School of Health Sciences at High Point University invites applications for a 12-month faculty position (non-tenure track) specialized in Human Pathology and Histology or Pathophysiology available August 1, 2022 (delay in start date may be considered) at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with education and experience.

Our Biomedical Science Program is a rigorous 11-month interdisciplinary curriculum with a student-focused approach in teaching clinical diagnostics and simulation, laboratory technical skill set development, enhancing scientific literacy and communication, and culminates in a 10-week capstone experience that is grounded in inquiry and service-learning through a Clinical Experience, Research Development, or Internship track.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and contribute to graduate level courses in:

  1. Pathology and Histology- Through lecture and laboratory, this 5-credit course will cover the initiation, progression, and outcome (pathogenesis)of disease.   The laboratory component will guide the detection of normal tissue vs cellular dysfunction through microanatomy analysis (slides), tissue processing (fresh and frozen), and staining techniques. Students will have completed Physiology, Medicinal Biochemistry and Statistics the semester before Pathology and Histology and will concurrently take Pharmacology and Gross Anatomy.
  2. Biomedical Techniques- This 3-credit laboratory-based course will focus on teaching laboratory techniques and assays most common in biomedical research. The goal is to move students to full competency for a least three standard techniques and the course will be developed to teach skills based in your scientific repertoire. Ex_ Primer design with RT PCR and real time PCR, functional cell-based assays (proliferation, cell death, survival, energy production), MIC assays, immunohistochemistry, western blots, pharmacological dose response and survival, microscopy, cell culture, or cloning, etc.
  3. Additional Program teaching responsibilities will include a combination of the following courses: Research Design and Writing, Special Topics, Capstone, Biostatistics, Healthcare Practice and Professional Development I (Ethics), or Standardized Exam Prep (MCAT, DAT, GRE, etc.).

In addition to success in the classroom:

Faculty in biomedical sciences will serve as student research mentors for the capstone experience and academic and healthcare professions advisors. The candidate will be expected to develop a research program adaptable to successful 10-week projects for our master-leveled students and for other HPU undergraduate students (if the faculty member so chooses to mentor undergraduates). The research area and model system is open; however, lower animal models, cell culture, or access to tissue samples is preferred. Startup funds will be provided as will laboratory and office space.
