Position Summary

The Program Coordinator conducts orientation sessions with middle and high school students, screens and evaluates new student applicants, and implements academic year off campus class instruction, tutoring, and counseling sessions. The Program Coordinator has primary responsibility for scheduling and conducting field trips for educational and cultural activities, arranging transportation for students in the summer program, and conducting academic counseling sessions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assists with the overall formulation and development of all appropriate program proposals, continuation applications and reports.
• Assumes primary responsibility for the development and compilation of relevant student performance data and statistics for the purposes of student placement as well as for use in proposal and report development.
• Assists in the preparation of all required evaluation and performance reports.
• Administers and compiles student needs assessments.
• Assumes primary responsibility for the placement of students in classes, matching students with tutors and mentors, and referrals to special assistance personnel. Responsible for the specific design, development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the Academic Guidance, Personal Counseling, Career Planning, and College Placement program components, particularly the Bridge/Transition components in both the residential summer and the academic year sessions.
• Assists in the design and monitoring of the academic curriculum.
• Conducts the orientation and training for summer residential staff.
• Assist in the supervision of summer residential staff, tutors, and the academic year and summer session instructors.
• Assumes major role in the identification, recruitment, selection, and orientation of students.
• Conducts exit interviews with all graduates and students who leave the program prior to graduation; and writes final summary reports for all students.
• Provides students with comprehensive personal and academic guidance and counseling, pre-college counseling, transition preparation, college placement, financial aid counseling, alumni follow-up, and related activities.
• Conducts appropriate workshops for parents.
• Conducts the program’s alumni follow-up and monitoring component; maintains contact with colleges and universities where students have been placed; and compiles appropriate reports and studies regarding program alumni.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)

1. Bachelor’s degree.
2. Additional education or other formal training in an area of specialization inherent to the position may be required.

3. Demonstrated work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position may be required.

2. Administration and Management — Knowledge of business and management principles involved in the presentation and delivery of academic programs, strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques, recruitment methods, and coordination of people and resources.
3. Active Listening — Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
4. Critical Thinking — Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
5. Knowledge of educational, evaluation, and measurement principles, practices, methods, and techniques, university policies and procedures.
6. Speaking — Talking to others to convey information effectively; ability to develop a rapport with students.
7. Written Expression — The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.
8. Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.

- Min of one (1) six-week summer residential experience working with students and staff
- Professional work experience within TRIO or similar programs;
- Background similar to student population to be served including from low-income family or first in immediate family to attend college.

Physical demands/requirements
  • Applicant is required to work late evenings, until 7 p.m. twice a week during the academic year, and some Saturdays.
  • Must be available to reside in the residence hall part-time, including overnights during the six-week summer session.
  • Ability to ride bus for long periods of time including overnight on trips to visit colleges.
  • Ability to conduct walking tours of campus.
  • Able to work overnight college visits
  • Must be fully vaccinated due to work responsibilities.
  • This position is 100% in person on campus or in the community
