Working closely with the Human Resource Manager, the Benefits
Specialist promotes Marian University’s Catholic Franciscan mission
and identity by working with and educating area leadership on our
comprehensive benefit program which includes, health, dental and
vision insurances; long term disability; life insurance;
retirement; tuition benefits; etc. Day-to-day responsibilities
focus on customer support, ensuring compliance with applicable
policies, procedures, laws, and regulations; providing technical
guidance and expertise to employees; public service loan
forgiveness, and other duties as assigned. The benefits specialist
will play a key role in advancing Marian University’s goals and
advancing the mission and strategic plan.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Actively engages the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values, honoring the legacy of the founding congregation, promoting unity in diversity, and integrating the Catholic Franciscan Intellectual traditions in courses, programs, and services.
- Develop strong working relationships with key stakeholders, vendors and customers.
- Communicates policies, procedures and manages benefits associated with tuition remission and exchange.
- Lead agent on all areas related to retirement benefits, including the Multiple Employer Plan (MEP).
- Process required paperwork and assist in the entry of benefit enrollment data for new hires, separating employees and employee changes in Colleague.
- Process appropriate reports for the benefits broker and vendors
- Assist employees regarding general benefit inquiries and the online benefits enrollment system.
- Assist with human resources records management.
- Assist with annual open enrollment planning, testing, communications, and data entry.
- Manage the overall administration of the unemployment benefits program in compliance with Indiana State Law.
- Manage workers compensation claims
- Lead and participate on special HR projects and perform HR departmental duties as required
- Additional duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration or a related field is required. SHRM certification or Master’s degree desired.
- At least 2-5 years of HR related benefits experience required
- Evidence of knowledge of Employee Benefits Administration methods, techniques, processes, and procedures
- Ability to take initiative and be proactive
- Excellent judgment, problem solving, customer service, diplomacy and interpersonal skills
- Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work in a team context and to set priorities, manage competing demands and to provide timely response to urgent issues
- Personal computing skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets and management software applications (Expert knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel)
- Ability to deal with sensitive and confidential matters with tact and discretion
- Proven experience in higher education or public-sector environment desired
- Ability to remain flexible in order to handle and prioritize workload from various sources
- Ability to keep current on new skills and learning opportunities related to HR field
- Must be able to understand organizational governance and mission in fulfillment of responsibilities
- Experience working with HR information systems (e.g., Ellucian/Colleague)
- Experience in higher education environment is preferred
- Perform other related departmental duties as required
