Job Summary:

The Research Cyberinfrastructure group at the Division of Information Technology (DoIT), University of Wisconsin-Madison, is seeking a Research Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Consultant to support the data and computational workflows of researchers and research communities across the University. The Research CI Consultant provides support to research CI systems/services and the researchers who use them. This individual will be responsible for delivery of one or more service offerings that function as platforms for data modeling, analysis, and/or visualization. These services support researchers in all disciplines across campus and a key responsibility of the Research CI Consultant is ensuring they integrate and align with the data, computational, collaboration, and compliance needs of researchers in a broad set of research scenarios.

The Research CI Consultant will be an important bridge between research CI resources and researchers, helping researchers leverage and adopt appropriate services and create research workflows to meet their computing, data management, and data security requirements. In that capacity, the Research CI Consultant will provide outreach, support, and training to researchers to facilitate their use of research CI systems and will help build communities of practice around the use of these systems. In addition to consulting with individual research groups, outreach responsibilities will include providing communications, training materials, and workshops, in partnership with other research CI groups to help researchers take advantage of the many research cyberinfrastructure resources the University provides. In addition, The Research CI consultant will manage relationships with external providers and vendors of research CI platforms to maximize resources available to UW-Madison researchers. The Research CI Consultant will gather input from research communities and advisory groups to inform ongoing planning for service enhancements that support the emerging needs of researchers in all disciplines.

The Research CI Consultant will partner with other members of the DoIT Research CI team, with DoIT teams in core service areas, and with colleagues in other units, including the Data Science Hub, the Libraries, the Center for High Throughput Computing, Research Data Services, the Social Sciences Computing Cooperative, and others. A successful candidate for this position will possess a desire for learning new skills in a rapidly evolving Research CI ecosystem, an understanding of researcher needs, and the ability to work independently as well as on teams.

About the Research Cyberinfrastructure Group
The Research CI team is a focus area within the Office of the Chief Technology Officer at the Division of Information Technology. This team was founded in 2019 and is growing and adding capabilities to meet the needs of campus researchers. Our team focuses on enterprise level services for data lifecycle, data storage, data science, and cloud computing. We collaborate with IT and research cyberinfrastructure colleagues in DoIT and academic units to enable adoption of services by researchers in all disciplines and with all types of data and compliance requirements. We are a researcher-facing group, helping users design, test, and adapt data collection and analysis workflows. Our vision is to provide an integrated end-to-end infrastructure that makes it easier for researchers to build data and computing workflow to enable their discovery and innovations. The RCI team strives to provide a working environment that welcomes all ideas, perspectives, and backgrounds and works together on complex and challenging research cyberinfrastructure issues.

Responsibilities:

Applies computational, computer science, data science, and cyber infrastructure (CI) research and development principles to provide advanced and varied consultation on research and technology integration and development. Provides non-routine maintenance, planning, and advanced troubleshooting to ensure CI resources meet research needs. Provides guidance and training to other staff and serves as subject matter expert for internal stakeholders.
  • 40% Serves as a CI domain expert, provides direct support of users, other staff providing support of users, and advanced computing systems
  • 30% Provides expertise and experience in CI to lead troubleshooting, analysis, operation, and support of advanced computing systems and for research
  • 10% Develops unique and custom Cyber Infrastructure solutions for research needs
  • 10% Writes and updates documentation and tutorials supporting CI activities for research. May provide brief courses for internal researchers and external collaborators
  • 10% Provides one on one consultations with departments and researchers to determine research cyberinfrastructure needs and match with appropriate solutions

Education:

Preferred
Master's Degree or higher degree with research experience

Qualifications:

Required:
-Professional experience supporting researchers and/or other clients as a member of an IT, Library, or computing service organization or research lab, group, or center
-Effective oral and written communication skills including presentation and public speaking
-Basic skills and familiarity with at least one of the following platforms: Jupyter Notebooks, RStudio, Globus, Gitlab, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure
-Demonstrated ability to work well on teams and independently

Preferred:
-Knowledge of the day-to-day processes involved in research and discovery, including research workflows, data lifecycles, and grant funding cycles and requirements
-Familiarity with current storage-, computation-, and data-intensive workflows in one or more research disciplines
-Basic coding skills in one or more of the following: Python, R, Bash, or comparable language(s)
-Experience collaborating with cross-functional technical teams to deliver IT services to varied researcher audiences
-Awareness of security protocols and regulatory compliance (i.e., HIPAA, FISMA, Controlled Unclassified Information) areas that impact research
-A passion for learning new technologies and new approaches for enabling and supporting researchers

The candidate selected for this position may perform a combination of on-site and remote work subject to an approved remote work agreement (RWA) agreement. Remote work requires successful candidates to possess their own high-speed internet and phone to perform the work on a university provided computer.
