Director of Presidential Communications

JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Presidential Communications prepares community outreach, speeches, reports, presentations, statements, daily correspondence, social media content, thought leadership, media content, and other materials on behalf of the University President. Additionally, this individual reviews and edits all communication pieces and related materials prepared by other departments for the President. The Director of Presidential Communications serves as a key strategist in managing crisis communications.

REPORTS TO: Chief Communications Officer, with a dotted line to the Director of Presidential and Board Operations

RESPONSIBILITES & DUTIES:
  1. Prepare speeches, talking points, and other written material, a process which includes researching, writing, editing and consulting, as well as developing and maintaining collegial relationships with professional peers at Adelphi and throughout the relevant professional community.
  2. Provide direction and management of related inboxes including proper escalation of select topics, opportunities, and/or issues.
  3. Create Power Points and presentations for strategic meetings, including development of graphics and templates in collaboration with key partners.
  4. Streamline processes to manage high volumes of multiple priorities including personalized notes, strategic newsletters, and segmented outreach.
  5. Draft correspondence and messages on behalf of the President and ensure that letters are accurate and reflect the President's voice and style.
  6. Anticipate episodic communications in response to local and national circumstances.
  7. Contribute expertise and effective writing to the research and development of strategic reports, position statements, articles, opinion pieces and other communiques on behalf of the President, focusing on institutional priorities, initiatives, and topics of relevance. Research may involve substantive evaluation and integration of emerging literature, quantitative analysis, etc.
  8. Work discreetly on sensitive or delicate assignments, while exercising sound editorial judgment and maintaining the trust and confidence of the President, senior executives and their staff.
  9. Review and approve communications from other areas that involve the President's voice (University Advancement, Alumni Relations, External Affairs, University Communications, Student Life, etc.)
  10. Prepare the President for media, videos and speeches.
  11. Prepare the President for (and support during) photo and video shoots.
  12. Develop campus-wide messaging on important topics requiring a presidential voice.
  13. Provide strategic coordination of multi-layered distributions involving presidential messages to successfully engage and inform stakeholders of the University.
  14. Attend meetings and events as needed with the President to capture information and ideas, take pictures for social media, and provide support.
  15. Generate and execute a social media and thought leadership strategy to advance presidential accounts and public access to expertise.
  16. Maintain current biographies, curriculum vitae, and website assets and ensure regular refreshes.
  17. Coordinate all communication activities involving the President, including content development, planning, presentation and logistics on behalf of the President in order to ensure a professional image to the University's constituencies.
  18. Serve as University spokesperson, as needed and directed by Chief Communication Officer.
  19. Work collaboratively in particular with University Communications and the President's Office Team, delegating writing assignments and requesting support as needed throughout the year.
  20. Perform other job related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
  1. Capacity to write rapidly and effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
  2. Must be self-motivated, self-directing and consistently able to promptly produce high-quality and reliable work, with a high degree of initiative and independence.
  3. Must exhibit strong organizational and research skills; responsiveness with the ability to handle multiple tasks in a timely manner.
  4. Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability, including a willingness to undertake both mundane and high profile tasks with enthusiasm and energy.
  5. Demonstrated ability to attend to both grammatical and factual details; desire to gain expertise with Adelphi's Editorial Style Guidelines.
  6. A collaborative mindset, with the ability to develop collegial relationships with professional peers and throughout the relevant professional community.
  7. Understanding and familiarity of the operations of a university president's office.
  8. Passion for social media as a communications tool (e.g., Twitter, Facebook and Instagram)
  9. Ability to handle highly confidential information with an appropriate level of discretion, integrity and professional judgement, with sensitivity to both individual and organizational needs.
  10. Support of the University's commitment to maintaining a diverse and inclusive environment.
  11. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  12. Ability to represent the University to all media outlets during times of crisis
  13. Experience with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and other presentation tools.
  14. Excellent leadership skills
  15. Ability to motivate others, provide compelling explanations, and listen effectively
  16. Strong, clear, and concise presentation and writing skills are essential.

PHYSICAL requirements:
  1. Ability to work with computers for long hours.
  2. Evenings and Weekend work are possible.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Bachelor's degree (master's degree preferred) in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, public administration or equivalent is required.
  2. Minimum of five years of related experience is required.
  3. Experience in executive communications for a higher education institution is preferred.
  4. Three (3) samples of your work in a single consolidated document must be submitted with the application for this position.
