Appointment: One-year visiting assistant professor in Geology/Earth and Environmental Sciences for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Responsibilities:

Teach five units for the year to include; 1) an introductory GIS course with labs that will serve students from all majors, 2) an upper-level spatial analysis course with labs (incorporating field mapping and GIS) for science majors, and 3) an upper-level Earth Surface Systems/Processes course with lab. Both of the upper-level courses would serve students from across the science and math disciplines. The University of Puget Sound Geology Department is in the process of transitioning to an Earth and Environmental Sciences Program, broadening the emphasis and audience of the program. This shift is in collaboration with the Environmental Policy and Decision-Making program, and the courses described above will serve students broadly interested in environmentally-relevant science. Enthusiasm for involving student in research is also expected, and the department is well-equipped to support such endeavors.

Qualifications: A doctoral degree (ABD considered) in Geology or related STEM field and a commitment to liberal arts education are required. Teaching experience in the course areas is preferred.

About the Department: The Geology Department offers a sound educational experience centered on understanding how Earth systems work through traditional lectures, hands-on laboratory experiences, and field-based exercises. We currently offer B.S. degrees in Geology and Natural Science with an emphasis in Geology. As noted under Responsibilities above, we are transitioning from a traditional Geology major to Earth and Environmental Sciences Program, broadening the scope of the program to encompass more concrete relationships to current, critical environmental issues.
