Assistant Director, Major Gifts: University Library
About the Opportunity
Northeastern University's Library seeks an entrepreneurial, proactive, and engaging fundraising professional to serve as the Assistant Director, Major Gifts for the University Library. Reporting into the Executive Director of Family Philanthropy and the Vice Provost and Dean of the Library, the Assistant Director of Major Gifts will partner closely with the Dean and other staff to increase awareness of and support for the library and the innovative programs, research, and interdisciplinary initiatives that take place there. The Assistant Director will execute on the strategic development plan for the library to raise philanthropic support from prospective donors of major gift capacity and expand long-standing partnerships.
The Assistant Director, Major Gifts will assist the Dean and program directors in identifying funding opportunities and will help to translate that work into compelling cases for support. They will examine past and current donor and prospect relationships to determine the potential for multifaceted partnership opportunities with alumni, parents, and friends. In addition, they will work with the university's central Corporate and Foundation Relations team to keep them apprised of opportunities within the library that are suitable for funding.
Operating as an integral member of the library, the Assistant Director will partner with Advancement colleagues to help realize the university's philanthropic priorities, fully contribute to and benefit from the achievements of the department and the university, and jointly execute ambitious fundraising strategies for the library. Work responsibilities will be carried out based on a plan to be developed collaboratively and agreed upon between the Executive Director of Family Philanthropy and the Vice Provost and Dean.
Specific Responsibilities and Duties
Reporting into both the Director of Family Philanthropy and the Vice Provost and Dean of the Library, the Assistant Director of Major Gifts will serve as the link between the university and individual donors, establishing, retaining, and expanding relationships for the university.
The following are the specific responsibilities and duties of this position:
- Coordinate with the Dean and staff to identify the full range of funding opportunities at the library and champion fundraising in support of initiatives.
- Collaborate with colleagues in University Advancement to achieve department and university goals; capitalize and contribute to available Advancement resources, foster internal partnerships, and appropriately leverage university assets for donor cultivation.
- Contribute to the university's efforts to expand and deepen relationships by working closely with colleagues within Advancement to identify and broaden partnerships where they intersect with university-level priorities and interdisciplinary initiatives.
- Develop and execute comprehensive cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies that expand relationships for the library and interdisciplinary programs.
- Manage a pool of targeted alumni, parent, and friend prospects to gain support through direct funding, gifts-in-kind, or other collaborative agreements; work externally with senior executives to maintain and establish regular avenues of communication and identify areas of mutual interest.
- Embrace opportunities for collaboration with development colleagues within the colleges in order to identify and cultivate new donors, and gain internal alignment for significant and interdisciplinary partnership opportunities across the university.
Qualifications
This position requires an understanding of development strategy, major gifts fundraising principles and practices, professionalism, collegiality, and self-motivation. An ideal candidate will have at least three years of fundraising experience with a focus on six-figure gifts and cultivating strategic partnerships with donors and prospects as well as a familiarity with an academic and/or research-driven environment. A demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and coordinate outreach, communications, and solicitation strategies.
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are necessary, with a philosophy of teamwork and hands-on implementation. The Assistant Director of Major Gifts must have a strong, metrics-driven approach to their work and an ability to work independently. They will possess the charisma, cultural sensitivity, and communication skills necessary to be an effective representative of Northeastern University. A Bachelor's degree is required.
- At least three years of relevant fundraising experience in a complex operation recognized for its strength and effectiveness; a high level of comfort and effectiveness working with individuals, parents, and friends;
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically about relationships with prospects, clearly articulate mission and core initiatives, and synthesize these concisely and persuasively to excite donors and prospects;
- The maturity, perspective, and credibility necessary to effectively engage and influence senior university administrators in the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of key prospects and donors;
- Proven capacity to manage and effectively execute large-scale events; strong organizational planning skills, customer-oriented focus, with a high degree of follow-up and responsiveness;
- The desire to work in an entrepreneurial environment; the creativity, energy, and political astuteness required to introduce and champion new ideas; an assertive but not aggressive approach; and the ability to influence, while maintaining the spirit of collaboration;
- A deep appreciation for the achievements and aspirations of Northeastern University; the ability to effectively articulate the vision of the university and the library to a diverse audience of supporters;
- Honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, and perspective; a very strong work ethic, supported by commitment and follow-through;
- Ability to travel, including nights and weekends.
