The Peabody Children’s Chorus is seeking applications for a part-time Assistant Director for the 2022-23 season. Since its establishment in 1990, the Chorus has grown from 30 to over 450 singers in 11 rehearsing ensembles and four preparatory classes.

As well as touring in Italy, France, Germany, Austria, England, Scotland, and Hawaii, the Chorus has performed with many local ensembles, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Choral Arts Society, Concert Artists of Baltimore, and Lyric Opera.

The Peabody Children’s Chorus values the highest artistic standards in all dimensions of our program, including choice of repertoire, tone of concerts, sound of ensembles, musicology and performance practice; we believe in a philosophy of education that fosters self-growth and discipline through the pursuit of excellence, beauty and concrete musical skills.

We are searching for a teacher who will nurture each chorister’s potential for artistic and personal excellence and who will foster a love of Music through skill-based learning.

Artistic & Teaching Responsibilities (5-8 hours per week)

Under the leadership of and in collaboration with the Director, the Assistant Director will:
  • Train and co-teach (with a long-term goal of teaching independently) Training Choir (ages 6-10) and Choristers (ages 10-12)
  • Help to plan, implement, and evaluate the artistic year and educational program.
Specific Qualifications
  • A minimum of three years of experience teaching and/or conducting; piano proficiency is desirable.
  • An aptitude for choral conducting, vocal pedagogy, including movable-do solfège and languages; an understanding of the young voice, age 6-18, as well as age-appropriate repertoire that engages and challenges choristers
  • Travel to campuses in Towson and Columbia.
Education requirements

Bachelor of Arts (required), Master’s degree in Music (preferred), from an accredited institution

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
