POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Director for Residence Life and Community Standards assists the Director for Residence Life and Community Standards in developing a student learning and living environment within St. Thomas University Student Housing. As a leadership team member, the Assistant Director participates in policy and procedure development, student learning and development, residential curriculum support, customer service, student assistance, and overall program development.

Specifically, the Assistant Director is assigned senior professional responsibilities to supervise and oversee 1-2 hall directors and 12–16 resident assistants in residential areas housing 700–820 students. The Assistant Director plays a crucial role in developing inclusive and supportive residential communities and responding to the needs of supervisees.

The Assistant Director is part of the Residence Life team and shares responsibility for leading critical processes for the on-campus housing experience. Focus areas that the Assistant Director may lead include
  • Student Conduct and Judicial Processes.
  • Student Success and Campus Connections.
  • Curriculum, Staff Education, and Recruitment.
  • Hiring and Staff Development.
The Assistant Director team will develop a collaborative experience for staff and students. St. Thomas University Student Housing houses approximately 800 students in the residence halls. Our office is strongly committed to promoting and supporting students from diverse backgrounds and identities through representative staff and equitable policies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

40% Staff Supervision and Focus Area Management
  • Assist the Director of Residence Life and Community Standards with creating a strategic plan, learning outcomes, and assessment strategies for the department.
  • Directly supervises, trains, and evaluates 1-2 Graduate Hall Directors and 12-16 Resident Assistants. Provides indirect supervision to other staff in the area, including graduate undergraduate paraprofessional desk monitor staff.
  • Manages the human resources functions for the supervisory area, including hiring and personnel action. Implements area staff development and training opportunities.
  • Leads and coordinates area and all staff meetings.
  • Collaborates with other STU departments in providing oversight and direction for high-level service to both students and staff.
  • Assists the Director and other senior-level staff with the development of short- and long-term facility repair, renovation, and construction master plans.
  • Collaborates with internal and external colleagues to ensure that student learning is emphasized, and appropriate skills are developed to reach the learning goals of a residential curricular model.
  • Provides direction and support to various residence life committees or workgroups by serving as a liaison.
  • Ensures that residence life staff members have the support and necessary training to facilitate and lead in-hall processes around campus-wide events such as move-in, hall closing, prospective student visit days, etc.
30% Student Conduct & Support, Crisis Management
  • Serves as the first point of contact for the supervision area in discipline/conduct-related cases and crisis response. Provides training, resources, expertise, and directives to all staff in the handling of discipline and crisis response.
  • Serve as an administrative hearing officer for middle- and high-level individual student misconduct.
  • Serve as an appeals officer for cases heard by the Hall Director.
  • Develops, oversees, and implements practices for the handling of Residence Life discipline/conduct and crisis response cases.
  • Provides support for housing interim suspension and relocation process.
  • Knows and understands the Student Code of Conduct, FERPA, Title IX, State and Local laws, and University and Student Housing procedure.
  • Serves as the main University Level Hearing Officer.
  • Assures all high-level situations are handled appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Appropriately communicates all discipline and conduct situations to upper administration.
  • Provides response and support to parents, students, and residents with elevated concerns about their residential experiences.
  • Oversee and serve as a member of the Administrator On-Call (AOC) team for all on-campus housing facilities; six (6) residence halls, approximately 800 residents.
30% Service, Advising and General Administration
  • Assists the Director in other designated responsibilities or special projects as assigned. Coordinates assigned responsibilities with appropriate University offices and staff.
  • Oversees budgets and appropriate spending for programming.
  • Facilitate communications to staff from other university units, including facility updates and problems, housing occupancy issues, health and safety concerns, and student outreach.
  • Makes decisions based upon data and assessment in collaboration with the Director.
  • Oversee residential responsibilities of summer housing and conferences including staff and student support and supervision.
  • Represents Residence Life at recruitment and orientations events.
  • Serves as a team member and liaison with other Assistant and Associates Directors and others within Student Housing and the larger university community.
  • Acts on behalf of the Director as assigned or appropriate.
  • Participates in local, state, regional, and national conferences, and other professional development opportunities.
  • Serves on Division of Student Affairs and University level committees as appropriate.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in higher education administration or a related area.
  • Minimum two (2) years of residence life-related management or administrative experience.
  • Experience supervising staff.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills as demonstrated by application materials and interview process.
  • Experience with the Resident Assistant and Administrator on Call role
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in higher education administration or a related area.
  • Experience working with a residential curriculum model.
  • Experience with the Student Code of Conduct Process.
  • At least one (1) year of residence life-related management or administrative experience.
  • Experience with Maxient conduct software.
  • Experience at small to mid-sized, faith-based institutions.
  • Experience with the Resident Assistant and Administrator on Call role
Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $34,000.00 - $36,000.00 per year
