Tenure-Track Assistant Professors (2): 1 in Cell Biology, 1 in Ecology

The Department of Biological Sciences at Union College invites applications for two separate tenure-track Assistant Professor positions to begin September 2023, one in Cell Biology and one in Ecology. Advanced appointments for experienced candidates may be considered in exceptional cases. We welcome scientists with a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and mentoring undergraduates and to fostering a diverse and inclusive Department and College. Each new hire will establish a successful research program that incorporates undergraduates. They will contribute to the Departmental curriculum by teaching in our introductory biology sequence plus an upper-level course in their field, with an opportunity to develop additional courses.

Cell Biology - The candidate’s research program in Cell Biology may be in any scale from within the cell to the multicellular.  The ideal candidate will be broadly trained in cell biology with an interest in teaching a majors’ course with a laboratory in this area. This position may also contribute to interdisciplinary programs in Biochemistry, Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering.

Ecology - The candidate’s research program in Ecology may be in any scale of ecological study, from individual to global scales, basic or applied, and should add perspectives beyond existing expertise in plant and ecosystem ecology. We encourage candidates who consider the ecological dimensions of public health and environmental justice issues. Teaching expectations include a majors’ course with a laboratory in ecology. This position may also contribute to the College’s programs s in Environmental Science and Policy and Environmental Engineering.

The Department of Biological Sciences at Union College is committed to teaching and mentoring students in the classroom and in our active research laboratories. The Department contributes to numerous interdisciplinary programs including Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Science and Policy, Environmental Engineering, Nanoscience, and Neuroscience (https://www.union.edu/interdisciplinary-studies).  Housed in the newly constructed Integrated Science and Engineering Complex, the Department is well equipped with NSF-funded instrumentation such as a microCT,  3-D multi camera motion analysis system, DNA sequencer, qPCR, scanning electron microscope, greenhouse, and substantial tissue culture and animal care facilities. We also have access to a continuous flow isotope mass spectrometer, elemental analyzer, and an ICPMS in Union College’s Stable Isotope and Geochemistry Laboratory. The College is situated in close proximity to a variety of terrestrial and aquatic habitats including the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains (see https://muse.union.edu/adirondack/), the Mohawk River, and numerous lakes, urban, and suburban areas that are amenable to field study.

All candidates must have a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in a biology-related field and preference will be given to those with at least one year of postdoctoral experience. Successful candidates will demonstrate the potential to develop an independent research program, as evidenced by scholarship and productivity during graduate and postdoctoral activities. Preference will be given to those who have a demonstrated interest in undergraduate teaching.
