Assistant Dean for Public Service and Director, Mortimer Caplin Public Service Center, School of Law

Charlottesville, VA

The University of Virginia School of Law seeks to hire an Assistant Dean for Public Service and Director of the Mortimer Caplin Public Service Center (PSC), to start in the fall of 2022.

The Assistant Dean for Public Service leads the Law School’s efforts to create an integrated program of career advising and development to students who are pursuing public service internships, externships, and/or postgraduate careers. As director of the PSC, the Assistant Dean provides strategic direction for, and day-to-day management of, the work performed by the PSC’s attorney directors and administrative assistant director. The center’s work includes: counseling and assisting students and law school graduates on all facets of their career searches; conducting public sector interview programs and employer outreach; creating educational programming and resources for students; administering summer and postgraduate fellowships and grants; advising student organizations about public service-related matters; and, gathering and reporting data on graduate employment. As one of the attorney counselors in the PSC, the Assistant Dean also engages directly in student and graduate counseling as well as in the broad range of activities performed by the center. The Assistant Dean works under the direction of the Senior Assistant Dean for Career Development and partners with the Office of Private Practice and the Office of Judicial Clerkships on matters affecting employment and employers. The Assistant Dean will also work in close coordination with the faculty director of the Law School’s curricular Program in Law and Public Service on matters affecting school-wide public service programs.

Requirements:

A J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school, plus a minimum of seven years’ relevant experience. The successful candidate will have at least five years of experience working in a public service law practice following graduation from law school, plus at least two years of postgraduate experience in any combination of: legal practice (private sector or public service), student services higher education administration, and/or a judicial clerkship.  Public service law practice is defined broadly to include legal employment by government agencies and/or nonprofit organizations.

Preferred experience includes:

Experience working in more than one field of public service law; experience mentoring attorneys and/or law students; and experience participating in the hiring and recruitment of attorneys and/or law students.

The successful candidate will also possess the following skills and qualities: demonstrated strength as a collaborative, innovative, and effective leader; superior problem-solving and conflict resolution skills; the ability to establish professional credibility and trust within a diverse community of students, graduates, and employers; exceptional interpersonal communication and oral presentation skills; exceptional writing skills, including the ability to provide effective critiques of students’ writing; superior project management and teamwork skills; and the ability to work diligently on multiple projects in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment.
