Investigative Reporter/Producer, Digital & Broadcast



Job Summary

The Producer/Investigative Reporter serves on the WGCU broadcast and digital content team. This position oversees the planning and execution of public broadcasting investigative reporting and is responsible for solutions-oriented, watchdog journalism with and in service to the communities and people affected by the issues we cover. Reports to the Managing Editor on the WGCU Content team.

WGCU is Southwest Florida’s source for PBS and NPR. A member-supported service of Florida Gulf Coast University, WGCU provides educational programming that inspires, informs and engages our community. Serving all or part of 12 counties in south and Southwest Florida, with five distinct digital TV channels, two FM radio channels, two HD radio channels, and multiple websites, WGCU delivers national and international programming, and develops, produces and delivers relevant, informative and educational local programs to the region.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Enterprise investigative stories for multiple platforms.
  • Selects television and/or radio broadcasting investigative content and plans program topics, and provides editorial guidance in conjunction with Producers, Editors, Assistants, and other newsroom staff, based on factors such as program specialties, audience tastes, or requests from the public.
  • Creates, produces, writes, and reports content for WGCU broadcast and digital platforms. Cover big stories and major breaking news when needed.
  • Uses credible sources, documents, data, public records and other journalistic tools to develop, report, and write exclusive stories and investigative projects.
  • Gathers and rewrites material to convey relevant information. Assists host with researching topics.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with civil leaders and local media to stay abreast of newsworthy events, local issues, and news.
  • Oversees and assists with all investigative journalism show recordings. Schedules guests for each program and coordinates all logistics for recording.
  • Edits and produces final programs for air and on-line.
  • Assists with program promotion both on-line and off the air. Represents WGCU in outreach, engagement, and fundraising activities on-air and off-air.
  • Submits FOIA requests and utilizes public records effectively in investigative and government accountability reporting.
  • Participates in on-air fundraising campaigns
  • Serves as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.
Other Duties
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
  • May serve as host/reporter in Content for broadcast and digital platforms.
  • May supervise student workers, interns, or OPS employees as assigned.
  • Participates in on-air fundraising.
Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Four years of professional, full time experience in television broadcasting.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Experience with producing, scripting, and editing long format documentaries.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Seven years of journalism experience.
  • Experience with public broadcasting, audio & video digital editing, FTP for production purposes, and field recording.
  • Experience using an HD camera.
  • Superior on-air voice presence.
  • Bilingual in English & Spanish.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of and ability to effective use broadcast and social media tools.
  • Knowledge of studio set-ups, including sets, lighting, and sound.
  • Skill in current digital audio editing and general desktop software applications.
  • Skilled in researching topics for news and interview broadcasts utilizing various resources.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations and environments.
  • Ability to use microphones, portable recording devices, and video studio production equipment.
  • Ability to direct live, multi-camera studio productions.

Grade 16: Salary commensurate with education and experience
