Job Description

Basic Functions & Responsibilities:
Develop, coordinate and direct a comprehensive sports medicine program for Kansas City’s 14 Division I varsity sports. The Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine will perform professional and administrative services essential for the health, safety and welfare of over 240 student-athletes. The Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine is responsible for oversight of athletic training room personnel and extended medical staff within the guidelines set forth by the NATA/BOC, NCAA and the State of Missouri to ensure a high standard of care for all student-athletes. The Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine will report directly to a member of the Athletic Director’s Executive Team and work in concert with the Head Team Doctor.

Essential Functions:
- Oversight and responsibility for the operation of the athletic training facilities, as well as the direct medical care of all student-athletes, including aiding medical personnel with the prevention and treatment of athletically related injuries incurred by student athletes.
- Oversight of unit’s strategic planning, policies and procedures, insurance coordination, and concussion management program.
- Provide direct support and coverage for assigned sport programs.
- Oversee medical staff, including athletic trainers, consultants, and interns.
- Serve as a liaison to doctors and other allied health professionals to deliver care to student-athletes. Collaborate with physicians, physicals therapists, Athletic Trainers, coaches, and sport performance staff to ensure proper evaluation, and treatment, and develop and implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs for athletic participation.
- Collaborate with Sports Performance, Sports Medicine (including Team Physician and Physical Therapist), Nutritionist, and sport coaches to create an optimal training environment for student-athletes.
- Collaborate with Psychologists, Team Doctors, and Academic Support personnel concerning mental health and the mental welfare of the student-athletes.
- Communicate effectively with coaches/student-athletes regarding injuries, rehab and playing status.
- Oversee the budget of the Athletic Training Room, including the purchase of equipment and supplies.
- Direct operations for educational programming and coordinate drug testing programs.
- Prepare and maintain various records, reports and information on injuries, treatments, etc. for insurance, legal or professional purposes.
- Attend scheduled team practices and competitions, including but not limited to home and away events for sports as assigned.
- Follow the NATA Code of Ethics. Remains current on all state and national requirements for license renewal.
- Performs other duties and special projects as requested and assigned by Head Team Doctor and/or Athletic Director’s Executive Team.

Supervision Received: Deputy Athletics Director

Supervision Exercised: Athletic Trainers, Student Assistants, Interns, Contracted/Part Time Medical Staff

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in related/ relevant area or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in athletic training or related field is required; Master's is preferred
  • NATA/BOC Certification, along with eligibility for state of Missouri medical trainer license.
  • First aid certified.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and sports medicine standards of care, ability to apply NATA/BOC code of ethics to care, excellent organizational and supervisory skills, strong communication skills, and a strong commitment to professional growth, demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment, and experience working in a comprehensive sports medicine environment.
  • Strong preference will be given to candidates with experiences as follows: a) 5-7 years of experience in athletic training, b) 2-3 years of NCAA Men’s Basketball athletic training experience, c) 2-3 years of leadership experience, and d) experience working with insurance and medical record programs. Preference will be given to candidates that can most effectively meet the progressive needs of UMKC’s Sports Medicine Program.

Full Time, benefit eligible. 40+ hours, some nights and weekends

Salary

$62,500 - $87,500 annually commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity
