The Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC) invites applications for an Academic Advisor II to collaborate, coordinate, and execute academic advising to students. This position, reporting to the Director of the Undergraduate Advising Center within the Office for Student Success, will serve as an advisor for admitted students receiving the Montana Impact Scholarship (MTIS) funding at the University of Montana (UM).

The Payne Family Impact Scholarship is a $7.5 million scholarship fund for Montana students who demonstrate significant financial need, particularly those who fall outside the Federal Pell Grant eligibility. Terry Payne, UM alumnus, made the donation for the creation of this amazing scholarship opportunity.

This position will serve as an initial point of contact for students starting at the University of Montana in the Fall of 2022. This advisor will be responsible for ensuring that all pre-admission criteria, including but not limited to housing, meal plans, financial aid, health holds, referrals to support offices, student employment, transcripts, dual -credit, insurance mandatory tutorials and technological supports are in place or completed prior to new student orientation. The MTIS advisor will carry a student caseload of students whose majors are in a variety of colleges and school as well as undeclared students. The advisor will meet a minimum of once a month with their students, and provide assistance on a walk-in basis. They will also carry out best practices in advising and objectives set by UM and the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education.

The MTIS advisor will collaborate closely with academic departments and primary advising contacts in each College and School to ensure smooth transition of each student into respective academic department of major after initial advising and general education evaluation is complete. This position is also responsible for tracking students’ progress and will adhere to the MTIS guidelines and associated best practices in advising.

  • Demonstrated commitment to students and to public education.
  • Ability to learn in detail undergraduate curriculums at UM.
  • Ability to learn the University of Montana General Education curriculum and the Montana University System General Education Core.
  • Ability to advise students regarding a myriad of issues from course selection to withdrawals and reinstatements to support services and referrals to counseling and tutoring.
  • Ability to learn and familiarize oneself with University of Montana academic policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of FERPA guidelines and ability to talk in accordance with federal statutes with parents and others concerned about a student’s welfare.
  • Ability to effectively use and assist others with advising technologies.
  • Ability to forge and foster professional relationships with academic departments and other advising and admissions contacts at community colleges throughout the state of Montana.
  • Ability to become knowledgeable about UM campus support and services offices.
  • Excellent verbal, written and listening skills.
  • Knowledge in the use of computer software programs, including MS Word, Excel and MS Outlook.
Minimum Required Experience
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree required and at least (3) years of academic advising experience or related experience in a higher education setting; or any combination of experience and education that provides the competencies necessary to successfully handle the duties and responsibilities assigned to the position.
About the Undergraduate Advising Center and UM

The Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC) is an academic support unit within the Office for Student Success (OSS). Located in Aber Hall on the 4th floor, the UAC is the academic advising home for all Undeclared, Pre-Nursing, undergraduate non-degree, and freshman Pre-Medical Sciences and Pre-Physical Therapy students whose primary majors are Undeclared.

The UAC also provides assistance to students campus-wide regarding general education requirements, registration support, major identification and declaration, academic petitions, and graduation applications. The UAC strives to connect students to beneficial campus services and resources, in addition to co-curricular opportunities available at UM and in the Missoula community.

Collaboration with our campus partners is a core strength of the UAC and OSS. The UAC and OSS collectively serve as the hub of campus advising services, acting as a central resource for faculty and department-based advisors and working collaboratively with recruitment, orientation and retention-based programs and services on campus.

Position Details

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year.

Salary: $16.984/hrCurrent employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and may be different from the posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
