Department Summary

Facilities Planning & Management is here to provide, maintain, and enhance the campus community in support of the University's mission. Facilities Planning & Management consists of two divisions whose combined scope encompasses all aspects of Facilities at California State University, San Bernardino: Facilities Management and Facilities Planning, Design & Construction.


Job Summary

Custodians provide a wide range of custodial and related duties for assigned campus areas (buildings, facilities, structures, and adjacent areas.)

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Daily removal of trash in all assigned areas and the transfer of it to the large containers near the buildings, or in the assigned recycling containers; disinfect and clean trash receptacles and other containers removing all trash and replacing liners as needed; flatten boxes and place in designated recycling areas if applicable. Provide additional coverage in areas for absent staff.
  • Replace lavatory supplies, restock custodial closets, and assist lead custodians in determining future inventory needs. Ensure all hand washing dispensers are maintained full and in adequate supply of product, where appropriate, such as in the custodial closets and/ or building spaces; ensure custodial closets are free of debris, organized and safe; personal items stored in proper place.
  • Disinfect, sanitize, COVID-19 terminal disinfect and clean assigned spaces adhering to campus standards and regulatory protocols, or as directed by the appropriate manager. Floor care consisting of sweeping, scrubbing, stripping, mopping, waxing and buffing floor areas. Vacuum and shampoo carpeted areas.
  • Report to the assigned area at the start of the shift and leave at the end of the shift; take breaks per the break schedule or as directed by the assigned supervisor; adhere to all procedures if will not be reporting to work; report to assigned lead custodian or appropriate administrator ready to perform duties. Secure keys and radio in the assigned area.
  • Disinfect, clean, and dust assigned areas from top to bottom, including furniture. Report to the lead custodian, or appropriate administrator lights and ballasts that are out for repair or replacement.
  • Properly secure doors and windows as required to assure building and equipment is secured. Secure doors and rooms after being serviced. Report unlocked doors to Public Safety and/ or appropriate administrators if appropriate. Direct inquires for entry into offices to Public Safety or the appropriate administrator.
  • Perform moving tables, chairs, desks, files, and other equipment and furniture. Carefully move furniture to not damage the furniture, floors, walls or doors. Store in proper areas as directed by the appropriate administrator or lead custodian.
  • Support special events, assemblies, registrations, athletic events, and commencement. Any problems shall be reported to event scheduling and/ or the appropriate administrator.
  • Under direction of a lead custodian or the appropriate administrator, assist in covering the duties of absent custodian based on the needs of the organization. Show initiative and willingness to perform tasks assigned within the job


Employment Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt, Probationary with the possibility of converting to permanent.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday from 1:30 pm to 10:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

Key Qualifications
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety; operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies applicable to the position; use custodial systems such as those used to track work orders and two-way radios for communication; observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required; perform work involving regular physical activity; and establish and maintain cooperative work relationships.

Physical Requirement
  • Must be able to lift, lower, push, and pull loads ranging in weight from 5-60 lbs.; must be able to carry loads ranging from 20-50 lbs. for distances up to 20 feet; must be capable of kneeling, reaching overhead, climbing stairs and ladders, walking, twisting, stooping, and bending; depending upon the project, employee may spend 20-50% of day sitting, 20-50% of day standing, 20-50% of day walking.

  • Education and Experience
    • A valid California driver's license.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • The equivalent to a high school diploma.
  • Custodial, janitorial, or housekeeping experience.

  • Salary

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,120 per month

    Classification Salary Range: $3,120 - $4,196 per month
