Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Biosafety Officer, the Assistant Biosafety Officer provides professional assistance to the Virginia Tech Biosafety Office in monitoring and coordinating a comprehensive biological safety program throughout all university research and teaching facilities in accordance with federal, state, local, and granting agencies requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Advanced degree in biological sciences, microbiology, molecular biology, public health, or related discipline OR education, training, and relevant work experience in safety, microbiology, molecular biology, or related field that equates to an advanced degree.
• Experience conducting inspections and interpreting and applying technical regulations and standards.
• Experience assessing risk and recommending corrective actions.
• Experience with developing and presenting educational/training programs for diverse populations.
• Knowledge and understanding of biosafety and biosecurity principles, policies, and procedures.
• Knowledge of NIH Guidelines, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories guidelines, and other relevant laws, regulations, and best practices.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and organize/prioritize assignments.
• Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population and foster a collaborative work environment.
• Proficiency with standard computer functions such as word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and internet navigation.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Documented Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval or ability to obtain SRA approval for access to select agents and toxins.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical proficiency in standard and special microbiological practices and safety equipment required for the safe handling of infectious agents and other biohazardous materials.
• Knowledge of plant pathogen and arthropod containment practices.
• Experience in a research and/or clinical lab work environment.
• Experience in a BSL2/ABSL2 and/or BSL3/ABSL3 work environment.
• Experience with facility and equipment management issues.
• Experience with OnSite Systems software for inspection management.
• Experience in higher education or public sector work setting.
• Experience in the application of biosafety/biosecurity principles.
• Documentation of or ability to obtain designation as a Registered Biological Safety Professional (RBP), Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or other related certification.

$63,000 - $66,000

Additional Information

Must be able to safely move and handle up to 50 pounds.
Considerable sitting and repetitive motion through keyboarding.
Must be able to travel to work sites and during site visits may stand, lift, reach, walk, climb and bend.
Work may involve exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following established safety precautions.
Must be able to wear a respirator.
Must have a criminal background check.
Must have a driver's license check.
Emergency Personnel health & safety related.
Eligible for telecommuting.
Must be able to perform job duties beyond normal work schedule, as needed.
Must pass Personnel Suitability Assessment requirements for access to select agent labs. This will include Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval from Federal Select Agent Program as well as Virginia Tech specific requirements.
Entrance into EHS occupational health program.
Eligible for alternate work schedule.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
