Job Description Summary
The Sala and Aron Samueli Holocaust Memorial Library/Schindler Collection Project Archivist is responsible for the description, preservation, arrangement, intellectual control, promotion, and creation of finding aids for artifacts and documents donated to the Samueli Holocaust Memorial Library and the Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education at Chapman University, focusing primarily upon the Oskar Schindler Archive.
The Project Archivist manages these donations, and provides outreach utilizing social media outlets in order to create awareness of items received. The Project Archivist may also work with the Long Term Digital Preservation Committee of the Leatherby Libraries to best utilize the University’s Digital Commons and the Digital Archives of California to increase access to these donations for research purposes.
Additional duties include promoting the donations’ importance in Holocaust and world history by establishing productive academic relationships through the provision of reference assistance to scholars, researchers, faculty, students, and the general public. Acts as registrar for material that is loaned to researchers, and handles all risk management and exhibition loan form requirements in consultation with the Director of the Sala and Aron Samueli Holocaust Memorial Library and the Chair of the Frank Mt. Pleasant Library of Special Collections & Archives.
This position may provide assistance in creating events and exhibits held on campus or in other venues related to the donations and may work in collaboration in arranging such donations with the staff of the Rodgers Center and Director of University Art Collections. Additionally, duties may include providing support for Rodgers Center lectures and other activities. The position is part of Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and reports to the Associate Director, Rodgers Center.

- Maintains physical and intellectual control of the World War II and Holocaust related donations to the Samueli Holocaust Memorial Library through description, arrangement, preservation, and creation of finding aids.
- Manages location in which donations are held during scheduled hours, assists with exhibits and displays related to the donations, and provides reference assistance to scholars and the general public. Promotes, publicizes, and creates awareness of the donations by establishing productive academic relationships as well as creating and maintaining ties with the community and assists in events and exhibits held on campus by the Rodgers Center and Samueli Holocaust Memorial Library.
- Acts as registrar for material that may be loaned to researchers; handles all risk management and exhibition loan form requirements in consultation with the Director of the Sala and Aron Samueli Holocaust Memorial Library and the Chair of Special Collections & Archives.
- Identifies and resolves rights clearance and permission issues, and obtains documentation for contributions in consultation with the Director of the Sala and Aron Samueli Holocaust Memorial Library and the Chair of Special Collections & Archives.
Required Qualifications
- Formal coursework or training in archival management and theory.
- Knowledge of the access tools for special collections and archival material.
- Working knowledge of the standards and procedures for preservation and conservation of paper, audio/visual media and artifacts.
- Demonstrated experience developing processing plans and creating finding aids in accordance with national standards.
- Knowledge of and ability to maintain awareness of developments in archival processing, digital information technologies, and their uses in special collections and archives.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
- Oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills to promote and present the archive to multiple audiences.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to convey accurate information in a professional manner and the ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals at all organizational levels, both inside and outside the University.
- General knowledge of the Holocaust and World War II as it relates to world history.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in history, archives, or library science.
- Minimum 1-3 years of demonstrated experience working with books, manuscripts, photographs, recordings, and other material in a special collections and archives environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of reading fluency in the German language or other European languages, including Dutch, Czech or Polish.
- Demonstrated experience providing reference services in a reading room environment.
- Prior experience with project archive’s management.
