Job Summary

The Associate Director, under general direction, assists the Director in all aspects of departmental operations and maintains responsibility for major functional unit(s) within a department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serves as part of departmental leadership team.
  • Leads strategic planning for areas supervised and assists Director in developing and implementing overall departmental strategic plans.
  • Responsible for annual budget preparation and expense control for areas of responsibility and provides input into overall department budget.
  • Establishes performance goals and measures to evaluate the success of areas of responsibility.
  • Assists Director in formulating and implementing policies and procedures. Supervises and directs staff and activities of project teams or functional areas.
  • Oversees the coordination of programs, ensuring program goals are consistent with departmental and University missions.
  • Serves on various University, division, and departmental committees and represents department at various State and National associations.
  • Ensures compliance with unit, department, University, and government standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Develops reports, analyses, and surveys for Director.
  • Completes special projects as requested by Director.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Monitors at-risk students and keeps track of their progress.
  • Conduct timely degree audits with a focus on students taking developmental education.
  • Collaborates with Academic Support services in building student college readiness skills.
  • Communicates with Career Services in advising students on their major selection.
  • Supports college academic success coaches in their efforts with transitional issues.
  • Oversees student-athletes throughout their academic career.
  • Conducts intrusive interventions for institutional recovery efforts.


Minimum Requirements
  • Education - Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, STEM fields, Education, or applicable field.
  • Experience - Eight years of related experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years supervisory experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Education and Experience

Education - Master's degree

Experience -
  • Demonstrated experience in working with at-risk and under-served population.
  • Student retention programs and recovery strategies.
  • Knowledge in Texas state requirements on development education.
  • One year experience in supervision of a team.


Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.


Ability to:
  • Multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding.


Preferred Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Advising tools such as Civitas, Banner system, DegreeWorks, Webfocus, etc.
  • Data collection, analysis and interpretation


Ability to:
  • Meet tight deadlines, particularly registration periods, reporting periods, add/drop deadlines, etc.
  • Apply data to measure efficacy of advising interventions and unit assessment.

Salary: $61,012/annually
