Dean, Carlson School of Management

The University of Minnesota invites nominations and applications for the position of dean of the Carlson School of Management (CSOM). Located near the influential business community of the Twin Cities, the school has been educating future business leaders for more than 100 years.

The next dean of the Carlson School will be a dynamic, engaged leader with strong interpersonal skills along with a proven track record of administrative and fundraising experience. The ideal candidate will have an innovative and inclusive management style, a capacity to integrate diverse interests and forge a common vision, and enthusiasm to support the success of highly-motivated students, faculty, staff, and alumni worldwide. Candidates will possess an earned doctorate or requisite terminal degree from an accredited higher education institution, along with experience and accomplishments that warrant an appointment as a tenured full professor in a top business school. The CSOM dean reports directly to the University’s Executive Vice President and Provost (EVPP), and serves as a member of the EVPP’s academic leadership team.

As the academic, administrative, and business community leader, the dean manages a school of more than 5,000 students, 142 faculty, ranked 10th in the world for the study of management, a deeply dedicated staff of 220, an operating budget of $130 million and a $305 million endowment. One of the first business schools to require an international experience, the Carlson School has 37 academic partners across the globe and boasts a community of 60,000 alumni in more than 100 countries.

The dean is responsible for promoting academic excellence of the educational and research missions of the University by providing leadership for undergraduate, graduate and executive education, delivered through 13 degree programs across seven academic departments within the Carlson School of Management. The dean leads and engages with CSOM faculty, program, and staff leadership to develop and implement a financially-sustainable strategy that leverages and optimizes existing programs and keeps the school at the forefront of undergraduate, masters, and doctoral business-related education, curriculum, and research. The dean should have a keen understanding of competition and trends in business education and the ability to manage and build a portfolio of educational programs to respond effectively to emerging competition. The dean will be a visionary, strategic, and inclusive leader, and someone who is committed to the highest standards of personal and professional integrity. The dean will be responsible for the business community’s engagement with the school, including through its longstanding advisory board featuring nearly 50 C-suite leaders from around the globe. The dean will also enhance productive relationships with alumni and donors.
