About the Department/Unit

Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution Services manages all non-academic conduct offenses and applies to all students, recognized student organizations and provisionally recognized student groups at American University, with the exception of Washington College of Law students. Alleged prohibited conduct relating to the university's Title IX Sexual Misconduct Policy and Discrimination and Non-Title IX Sexual Harassment policy are referred to the Office of Equity and Title IX. Any member of the university community may file a complaint using the Student Conduct Complaint Form.

Summary/Objective

Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution Services office administers the student disciplinary system, which resolves alleged violations of the Student Conduct Code by a student or a student organization. The Student Conduct Coordinator conducts disciplinary conferences with students and handles the administrative processing of cases The Student Conduct Coordinator also ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures, manages departmental data report requests, and assists with training of Conduct Council panel members.

Essential Functions
  1. Hearing Officer: Administers the disciplinary process for the university’s non-academic alleged violations. Serves as a hearing officer, including communicating with students, parents, and other third parties by educating them about procedures and processes as well as policies. Ensures due process and fairness of sanctions, and upholds all university policies and laws regarding confidentiality and student privacy. Writes and reviews decision letters for consistency, format, and accuracy and consults with director regarding any case specific questions.
  2. Administrative: Completes discipline/background checks when proper authorization is provided and maintains the highest levels of confidentiality according to university regulations and federal law. Assists with the management of sanction compliance, assessment, and other administrative tasks as needed.
  3. Communication and Collaboration: Responds to inquiries, informing interested parties (including students and parents) about the nature of services offered by the office. Acts as a liaison with other departments and groups, including Conduct Council members, Public Safety and Housing & Dining Programs staff. Coordinates and maintains the confidentiality of discipline records and any other correspondence materials and ensures that data are accurately entered into the database.
  4. Special Projects: Coordinates special projects, programs, and meetings at the direction of the director and assistant director; assists with logistics of special programs such as trainings and outreach sessions.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master's degree or equivalent.
  • 3-5 yeaes of relevant experience.

  • Advanced Communication:Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, using language with precision; constructing logical arguments; accurate note taking, editing and summarizing; and writing reports or correspondence free of spelling and grammatical errors.
  • Diagnostic Information Gathering:Ability to seek out relevant people to obtain information; probe skillfully to get at the facts when others are reluctant to disclose the full details; ask clarifying questions; and gain a complete and accurate picture by checking multiple sources.
  • Standard Office Software:Skill using email, word processing, spreadsheet/ data analysis and presentation development software applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint while preparing briefings, reports, and presentations.
  • Must have highest standards of integrity and ethics in both performance and behavior.
