Summary/Objective

This position manages campus sustainability outreach, communications, education, and behavior change initiatives. This position requires applied knowledge of sustainability principles; the ability to connect outreach and education efforts with university sustainability goals; extensive collaboration with students, faculty and staff; and supervision of student employees.

Essential Functions
  1. Outreach:Design, implement, modify and manage sustainability educational, operational, or behavior change programs as appropriate. Assesses effectiveness of programs. Researches and identifies trends and needs for new programs. Collects and analyzes data related to outreach for use in campus sustainability assessments and reports.
  2. Communications:Develops and oversees office communications strategy with support from the other sustainability staff and students. Manages sustainability communications regarding AU’s sustainability projects and initiatives, including website, email newsletter, e-mail listserv, news items, presentations, social media platforms, and informational signage and materials campus-wide. Presents on sustainability programs at conferences.
  3. Administration:Administrative support for the office and related groups. Staffs the general e-mail account and primary phone contact number for the Office of Sustainability. Supports the Director of Sustainability Programs and other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibility
  • This position operates with moderate supervision.
  • This position supervises students and does not handle expenses or budget.
Work Environment
  • This position reports directly to the Director of Sustainability Programs and works closely with offices across campus.
  • The position supervises student interns and requires functional knowledge of sustainability outreach principles.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, business or related area.
  • 3 years of related experience.
  • Experience related to the practical application of sustainability principles.
  • Experience working with students and student organizations.
  • Experience developing and managing sustainability related programs.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Higher Education work experience.
  • LEED accredited professional.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective education and outreach skills.
  • Ability to effectively plan and coordinate multi-task requirements and meet self and imposed objectives and deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a service oriented environment subject to changing priorities.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers in a Windows environment.
  • Ability to learn and grasp new software applications as necessary to proficiently manage the area of responsibility.
