Job Description Summary

The Mathematics Department at Prince George’s Community College provides innovative mathematics instruction that is student-centered, intended for a diverse assortment of learners, and designed to develop essential math skills so students are able to understand and apply mathematical concepts and reasoning, as well as develop the skills of analysis and data interpretation. We are looking for prospective professors to promote and encourage student success through quality instruction and real-world learning experiences. Contract begins Fall 2022.

Under general supervision, the Professor of Mathematics will develop, prepare and teach a variety of coursework which may include developmental mathematics, intermediate algebra, college algebra, precalculus, calculus 1 – 3, introductory differential equations, liberal arts mathematics, linear algebra, number theory, elements of geometry, probability, and/or statistics. Faculty may be assigned to any one PGCC’s campuses, Largo, UTC, or Laurel . Candidates must have the flexibility to teach at any one of these different sites and at different times throughout the academic year. Additionally, course offerings may be taught during the day, evening, or online, as well as taught using other distance learning formats. Full-time faculty have a primary ten (10) month contract based on teaching 15 credit hours in the Fall and 15 credit hours in the Spring. Teaching opportunities beyond contractual obligations, including during the summer may be available for additional compensation based upon departmental need.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
  • Master’s Degree Required
  • Satisfactory completion of 30 semester hours or more of relevant academic study in an accredited doctoral program may, at the discretion of the Vice President, be determined to meet this requirement.
  • One year full-time, or equivalent part-time, teaching experience at the high school or college level in Mathematics or significant professional experience relevant to teaching area.

  • Extent and relevance of graduate educational preparation to anticipated teaching assignments.
  • Relevance of teaching experience to anticipated teaching assignments.
  • Relevance of non-teaching professional experience to anticipated teaching assignments, e.g. curriculum development.
  • Evidence of quality teaching, including faculty evaluation scores and ratings, teaching awards earned, courses designed, developed and/or revised, etc.
  • Evidence of currency in professional discipline through continuing education, professional development and/or scholarly activity, including familiarity with NCTM and AMATYC Professional and Curriculum Standards.
  • Evidence of ability to teach all levels of mathematics (algebra through calculus) effectively, with expertise in teaching statistics and/or mathematics for teachers preferred.
  • Evidence of experience in the use of graphing calculators, computer applications, the internet, and other pertinent multimedia in teaching mathematics.
  • Evidence of experience motivating and teaching students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, cultures, preparation, learning styles, and disabilities.
  • Extent of diligent, conscientious, and constructive working relationships with professional colleagues and the ability to assume a leadership role.
