Academic Advisor (Student Services Professional 1 – MR07 )

The Academic Advisor provides academic advising for undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) programs. The position manages an advising caseload through accurate record keeping and, when appropriate, connects students to faculty advisors/mentors, tutors, support services and other resources to ensure students receive personal assistance and connections to resources necessary to progress in and complete their studies successfully. The Academic Advisor develops and maintains a strong communication line with academic departments in the College and various student support divisions. The position provides comprehensive support to CAS students in areas including new transfer processes, success and retention strategies, distance student success strategies, student progress monitoring and the implementation of intervention strategies to assist in their success. This may include individual advisement, as well as seminars/group advisement, and regular participation in New Student Orientation. The Academic Advisor attends to student academic inquiries, assists in the resolution of individual academic issues, and coordinates with multiple academic units in the processing of student requests and resolution of academic problems.

Duties and Responsibilities

Student Support

Manages a caseload of students in designated program areas; proactively engages with caseload of students during semester; anticipates potential obstacles for student success and responds accordingly for respective caseload; meets with caseload students each semester during designated advising times; addresses needs of each individual student during advising session; communicates efficiently and appropriately in a timely manner with other departmental and faculty advisors regarding student caseloads; connects students with co-curricular and extracurricular activities to become engaged in the UTC and Chattanooga communities; supports students with completion of graduation requirements and makes appropriate referrals for necessary paperwork and commencement planning; creates/updates Academic plan for all students within caseload; keeps records of all advising sessions using the Navigate platform; serves as a pathfinder to teach students how to access resources, finds answers to questions and resolves issues; and provides professional, courteous service to students seeking support within the hub, student success center.

Programming/Service

Participates in career-readiness and success programming within the College of Arts and Sciences; participates in seminars/group advisement; participates in pre-registration of incoming first-year and transfer students, presents information sessions, and assists students with registering during New Student and Transfer Student orientation sessions; and performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work effectively with students and faculty of all cultural backgrounds and experience levels
  • Attentiveness to detail
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to prioritize multiple requests and handle them in an efficient and timely manner
  • Ability to thoroughly understand and abide by federal and university guidelines regarding student confidentiality requirements
  • Proficient use of computers and knowledge of various software programs

Minimum Requirements: Requires a Bachelor’s degree and a work background in an educational setting working with students’ academic needs.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree; work background in a higher education setting working with students by providing advising services and/or coordinating support services; and experience with Banner and Student Success Collaborative or other student success platform.
