Job Summary

*This position is on a 10/12 Pay Plan, which means working 10 months per year, yet having salary paid out over 12 months. The months off are June and July. The compensation rate listed above reflects a 10/12 or .80 proration of a full month’s salary.*

Under the direction of the Accessible Education Center Director and the supervision of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHOH) Program Coordinator, Realtime Captioners provide immediate verbatim translation of spoken English into text using court reporting methods, a steno machine, realtime technology, software and a laptop computer. The consumer(s)’ reads the text on a laptop computer screen or other display device as it is being created in such settings as the classroom and/or other academic, instructional or administrative situations. The Captioner does not summarize information, but provides a complete transcription of all spoken words and environmental cues. Incumbents often provide consumer(s) with a final, edited transcript.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide real time captioning with the speed and accuracy needed for classroom lectures, academic activities and campus events with an easily readable format; to provide a communication link between the student and instructor
  • Maintain and upgrade steno-captioning academic dictionary and create and edit transcripts
  • Provide transcripts in a timely manner
  • Remain current regarding developments, trends, techniques and technology in the field of teal time captioning
  • Caption at 180 words or more per minute with a high level of accuracy
  • Transport equipment to classrooms and other sites
  • Set-up real time captioning equipment with minimal distraction in all settings
  • Analyze and troubleshoot basic equipment and software problems
  • Assists faculty in supporting effective communication in compliance with ADA, Section 504 and Section 508 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the CSU Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI)
  • Performs assigned administrative tasks and other related functions as required by the University
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of complex subject matter that provides fluent, accurate, and specific translation while performing real time captioning
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, adhere to RID Code of Conduct, and appropriately handle sensitive communications with students, employees and external agencies
  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment
  • Possess strong organizational skills
  • Through knowledge of business methods, procedures and practices, English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf culture and working knowledge of the Deaf Community
  • Ability to advocate effectively for students with disabilities working with university personnel
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, adhere to RID Code of Conduct, and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies
Required Qualifications
  • Formal training in court reporting and steno methods to meet position requirements is required
  • Six to twelve months of experience providing real-time captioning services
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certificate of Completion from a Court Reporting Program
  • Experience working with students with disabilities
  • Experience in higher education


Compensation

Classification: Realtime Captioner
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,028/month - $4,800/month (10/12 plan at 0.8 FTE)
CSU Salary Range: $4,028/month - $8,748/month (10/12 plan)

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. SJSU will issue a contingent offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. The standard background check includes: criminal check, employment and education verification. Depending on the position, a motor vehicle and/or credit check may be required.
