Job Summary:

The Mechanical Engineering Research Administrator will provide strategic leadership, direction, and expertise in pre and post-award management including; budget preparation and review; proposal review and tracking, and new award set up in accordance with contract guidelines; assist Principal Investigators (PIs) with effort management; interpret and ensure spending in compliance with sponsor and University regulations and policies; reporting and related clerical support associated with the processing of grants and contracts; analyze and reconcile project fiscal reports to identify and resolve discrepancies; review and approve allowable expenses as stipulated by sponsor guidelines; oversee close- out of projects; provide guidance and training to faculty and research personnel in the requirements of grant management, and long-range forecasting to aid PIs with strategic planning of research programs. This position will be deployed from the College of Engineering's Dean's Office Research Administration unit to the Department of Mechanical Engineering to work with faculty and staff on grant and research administration functions.

Responsibilities:

Manages research administration activities from proposal preparation through closeout on behalf of a school/college/division. Reviews and approves proposal submissions, contract negotiations, project setups, compliance, and/or financial reporting. Develops and oversees implementation of operations and strategic planning to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements within a school/college/division. May manage a programmatic unit and/or personnel.
  • 15% Executes research administration operational policies and procedures including financial, administrative, staffing, and compliance on behalf of a school/college/division
  • 15% Reviews and approves programmatic transactions spanning the life-cycle of sponsored projects to ensure compliance with institutional and/or sponsor policies and procedures
  • 10% Serves as a key resource to leadership and staff in the unit as well as a liaison to partners and stakeholders
  • 20% Executes activities related to proposal submission, contract negotiation, and/or award setup on behalf of a unit
  • 20% Executes activities related to financial compliance, audit, or reporting on behalf of a unit
  • 20% Provides training to faculty, staff, and/or administrators within the unit regarding policy, procedure, and/or execution of sponsored project administration

Qualifications:

Experience in a financial role preferred. Must have strong analytical and writing skills and possess the ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms with faculty, researchers and staff at all levels. This position requires a significant degree of organization, and interaction with faculty, staff, students, campus administrative departments, Deans, grantee organizations, and both federal and non-federal research sponsors.
