Job Details
The Department of Psychology at Amherst College invites
applications for an open rank tenure-
line position from candidates with a Ph.D. in developmental or
social psychology whose research
focuses on Asian Americans, and whose research program has a
substantial basis in the United
States, beginning July 1, 2023. The position is part of a
three-faculty-position cluster hire in
Asian American studies. The candidate will join new and continuing
faculty in other departments
in teaching and research focused on Asian Americans and/or Native
Hawaiian and Pacific
Islanders. This position is ideal for candidates with a strong
commitment to teaching and an
active research program that can involve bright undergraduates from
diverse backgrounds. The
successful candidate will be able to develop a repertoire of
courses that include introductory
psychology, cultural psychology, Asian American psychology, and
either a research intensive lab
course or an advanced seminar. The teaching load is two courses
each semester; two of these
courses should have significant content on Asian Americans and
serve in the eventual
development of a major in Asian American studies. The successful
candidate will be expected to
advise honors theses. Any appointment with tenure will be
contingent upon a positive tenure
review.
The Department of Psychology is housed in the college's
award-winning science center, with
dedicated research space for each faculty member. In addition,
Amherst College offers generous
support for faculty research and teaching, including fully paid
sabbaticals every three years,
funds for travel to professional meetings, and support for
undergraduate research collaborators
both during the academic year and the summer.
Located in Western Massachusetts, with close proximity to
Springfield, Massachusetts, as well
as Hartford, Connecticut, Amherst participates with Hampshire,
Mount Holyoke, and Smith
Colleges and with the University of Massachusetts in the Five
College Consortium. The five
institutions are located within 11 miles of one another and about
80 miles west of Boston.
Amherst College is a highly selective liberal arts college with a
strong institutional commitment
to diversity, as described in this link. Nearly
one-quarter of Amherst's students are Pell grant
recipients; 43 percent of our students are domestic students of
color; and 10 percent of our
students are international students. Amherst actively seeks and
welcomes applications from
candidates from traditionally underrepresented groups, as well as
from candidates with
demonstrable commitments to a more inclusive world. Given Amherst's
commitment to
fostering an intellectually challenging and inclusive educational
environment, our expectation is
that the successful candidate will demonstrate competence and
sensitivity in teaching and
mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race,
ethnicity, ability, socioeconomic
status, gender, nationality, sexual identity, and religion.
Candidates are asked to submit
electronically to http://apply.interfolio.com/108445
a cover letter; curriculum vitae; statement describing their
scholarly development and accomplishment that includes a discussion
of how undergraduates will
participate in their research program; statement describing their
teaching philosophy and
background, experience, or interests that are likely to make the
candidate a strong teacher of a
diverse range of Amherst students; and three sample
preprints/reprints. Candidates are also asked
to arrange for three confidential letters of recommendation to be
submitted. The individual must
have a Ph.D. in hand or have fulfilled all requirements for the
degree by the start of the
appointment. Applications received by September 30, 2022, will be
assured of full consideration.
Review of applications will continue until the position is
filled.
