VT Recovery Community Assistant Director

Job Description

Virginia Tech’s Hokie Wellness is seeking a leader in the collegiate recovery movement to grow and develop its Recovery Community, so that it can effectively meet its goal of being a diverse, positive, and inclusive space and reach even more students who are seeking recovery.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Hokie Wellness, this position will promote recovery and student wellbeing through development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the university’s recovery support initiatives. These initiatives are designed to engage and empower people in recovery or considering recovery, as well as recovery allies.
While students are the primary focus of this position, supporting the wellbeing and health of students necessitates considering and supporting the welfare of faculty, staff, and alumni. The Assistant Director will supervise part-time staff, student employees, and interns through the role of supervisor, educator, and mentor, and connect individuals to appropriate on- and off-campus clinical providers. This is a full-time 12-month university faculty position with all state benefits and is fully funded until June 30 2024.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in addition to at least one direct experience working with the recovery community at large (or closely related experience). We welcome and value the lived experience of individuals in recovery.

• Minimum 3-years experience working with people with a substance use disorder.
• Experience supervising professional staff and/or students
• Understanding of young adult issues, emerging needs, and top concerns
• Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating recovery support initiatives and programs
• Ability to maintain ethical standards of professional care and confidentiality
• Prior experience managing a departmental budget
• Commitment to diversity, social justice and creating inclusive environments
• Thorough understanding and knowledge of harm-reduction, substance use disorders, recovery, and recovery support services
• Ability to create and maintain collaborative partnerships across campus and within the community
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
• Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes some evenings and weekends

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Public Health, Social Work, Substance Use, Counseling, or a closely related field of study.
• Experience collaborating, volunteering, or working with recovery community organizations.
• Professional experience working with a collegiate recovery community or other recovery community organization serving young adults
• Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating health promotion programming
• Three years of experience working directly with the recovery community in general in any capacity
• Knowledge of best practices in collegiate health promotion and public health
• Experience in grant writing and award management
