Job Description

The Graduate College is seeking a highly-motivated Instructional Designer to join our high performing team to collaborate with college leadership, staff, faculty, and subject matter experts in design, development and scalable delivery of Graduate College digital courses, programs and initiatives for students, staff and postdocs to increase success and reduce barriers to achievement. The person in this position will work both independently and as part of a team-based model to create online course and course materials for graduate students and postdocs using multiple learning management systems (and other instructional technologies) and applying best practices in teaching and learning. This person will also use various metrics, methods and platforms to assess student and postdoc needs, and to evaluate the outcomes and effectiveness of the courses to aid in the development of a high-caliber, successful program.

 

Salary Range

$47,415 - $75,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

  • In collaboration with faculty and/or other subject matter experts, designs and develops engaging, interactive and instructionally sound learning materials, including assessments, in alignment with learning objectives and goals.
  • Partners with Graduate College faculty, staff and technical team to design, develop and deliver online course content, materials, interactive and multimedia technology-driven components, and other support materials consistent with established design and development processes to ensure flexibility and reusability related to Graduate College offerings.
  • Uses various metrics, methods and platforms (such as surveys, focus groups, and analytics) to assess graduate student and postdoc needs, and to evaluate the outcomes and effectiveness of the courses.
  • Develops course syllabus and storyboards including, but not limited to: sequence of instructional concepts, required media, tutorials and assignments.
  • Edits instructional materials for grammar, clarity, consistency, and accuracy of content.
  • Utilizes and recommends effective and creative uses of technology and multimedia to enhance instruction including content authoring tools, document creation applications, presentation tools, video and other technology resources to develop custom products.
  • Assists in writing learning objectives to incorporate content standards and curates content in support of objectives.
  • Evaluates and confirms learning objectives and outcomes through ongoing assessments
  • Evaluates training needs, designs/redesigns training programs and supplemental materials and implements training programs to meet changing needs and objectives.
  • Reviews existing programs to assess the potential for online delivery and provides recommendations on appropriate ways to scale up programs.
  • Makes recommendations on which areas of curriculum can be redesigned and/or enhanced using technology and/or online platforms.
  • Works both independently and as part of a team-based model to create desired outcomes.
  • Collaborates with others (e.g. software developers, technologists, project managers, graphic designers) to review and edit content and integrate contributions to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of design and development models and processes.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to support a quality assurance process of reviewing and testing for courses, following standards from the Quality Matters Rubric and additional department guidelines.
  • Collaborates with team to ensure ongoing effective course readiness and alignment of program outcomes across the college.
  • Assists with evaluation of technology effectiveness, quality assurance, editing, adapting content and implementing recommended changes to improve learning.
  • Provides troubleshooting, technology, documentation, event information and educational design consultation support to faculty and subject matter experts.
  • Develops and maintains resources such as tutorials, reference material, design standards, content resources, templates, and tools for instructional development.
  • Remains current on, evaluates, identifies and communicates best practices, learning theories, and emerging instructional technologies, and incorporates these into content standards and learning objectives; and communicates these internally through training sessions, conferences and publications.
  • Contributes to custom software design specifications and documentation.
  • Assumes or coordinates other duties or projects as assigned or directed.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field. Three (3) years of providing learning/instructional design and/or technology development services. Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. 

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with diverse populations and cultures
  • Demonstrated knowledge of learning and instructional design theories applied to course design and content development
  • Experience with instructional design in a higher education environment
  • Experience in graphic design, multimedia, and HTML applications 
  • Experience using a variety of industry-leading technologies and products for development of course content, presentations, web pages, web applications and tutorials
  • Experience working in a Learn Management System environment to develop online courses (e.g. Canvas, Moodle, CareerEDGE, etc)
  • Demonstrated knowledge with Universal Learning Design, accessibility, and inclusion in the higher education landscape
  • Experience editing for digital environments
  • Experience collaborating and supporting constituents in a higher education setting
  • Experience in managing multiple projects, prioritizing competing demands, and working both independently and interdependently 
  • Evidence of effective communication skills

 

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse 75 percent; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work 10 percent.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds 15 percent. 
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
