About the University

Willamette is a small, highly selective private university of 2600 students, 1400 of them enrolled in our undergraduate College of Arts & Sciences; other schools include the Atkinson Graduate School of Management, the College of Law, and the Pacific Northwest College of Art, which enrolls both undergraduate and graduate students. We are located in Salem, Oregon, the state capital, which lies 45 miles south of Portland.

Willamette recognizes that the university's history is fundamentally tied to the first colonial developments in the Willamette valley. Our Salem campus is on the land of the Kalapuya, who today are represented by the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. We strive to engage with these issues and peoples through a range of programs and bodies, including the Chemawa Partnership program, a Native American Advisory Council, and a Native and Indigenous Student Union, which has partnered with the local community in hosting an annual on-campus social Pow Wow for the last 20 years. Our Hallie Ford Museum of Art has an excellent collection of Native American Art, some of which is on display in The Confederated Tribes of the Grande Ronde Gallery.

Willamette University believes that a diverse, inclusive community is essential to achieving academic excellence; accordingly, we seek candidates who not only have the potential to become outstanding teachers and scholars, but whose work also furthers equity and inclusion, and who will bring to campus varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds. Willamette University enrolls a substantial number of low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students of color. Over the past two years, 24% of our students were first-generation; 24% were Pell-eligible; and 33% identified as African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, or of two or more ethnic backgrounds.
