The Associate Director of Academic Advising provides leadership for undergraduate advising at the University, developing and leading major initiatives related to student success, retention and graduation. The Associate Director provides advocacy and support for advising; works with college advising leaders to foster cross-campus collaboration through establishing and maintaining clear communication channels; and advises senior leaders regarding achievement of strategic goals and application of national best practices across Ohio University’s decentralized but standardized advising system. The Associate Director assists with leading Ohio’s advising initiatives; and will also oversee assessment of academic advising practices and outcomes across the University, providing reports and recommendations regarding continuous improvement.
The Associate Director will report to the Executive Director for Academic Advising and Graduation Plans and will collaborate with individuals and units across campus to promote student success. Candidates for the position need to be accomplished individuals with knowledge of, and experience with, student success issues in higher education, best practices in academic advising and how to evaluate them and supporting first-generation and diverse student populations. The person in this role also needs to command a thorough understanding of university policies, curriculum, and procedures.

Duties include:
  1. Contribute to the oversight of university-wide advising efforts, including the development of a cohesive, collaborative advising structure and culture. Oversee reenrollment advising
    and exit interview processes.
  2. Select, train, supervise, and evaluate graduate student advisors to support students in transition between majors or who are adding a major, minor, or certificate.
  3. Develop, deliver, and coordinate advisor training opportunities; create and maintain a centralized advising website featuring online training, an advising wiki, professional
    development opportunities, etc.; create and plan a centralized advisor award system tied to professional development funds
  4. Advise students in transition between majors or who are adding majors, minors, or certificates. Assist with graduation plans, class schedules, and decision-making.

 

The person in this position supervises two full time academic advisors and has shared responsibility for five college advisors.
