The School of Art & Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications to fill one or more open-rank, non-tenure-track faculty appointments (up to 100% time for up to 9 months). Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate- and graduate-level courses for the School of Art & Design in one or more instructional fields, mentor and oversee Graduate Teaching Assistants as needed, meet with instructors of other sections when appropriate. These appointments may be eligible for renewal at the School’s discretion.

Current positions available include the following nine-month positions:

• Adjunct Lecturer/Lecturer, Studio Art, New Media: Time Arts, Image Practice, Interaction. This appointment is for one year and will include teaching at least two courses each in the fall and spring semesters. Introductory level courses may include: time-based media (video production and editing, animation, and audio); digital image making (basic concepts of digital images, digital montage/collage, digital workflows); interactive media (computational processes, interface aesthetics, and narrative/paper prototyping).
• Lecturer in Graphic Design: Graphic Design Toolbox, Typographic Practice, Typographic Systems, Interaction Design Foundation, Type and Image, Advanced Interaction Design, Interaction Design, and Introduction to Graphic Design. This appointment is for one year and will include teaching at least two courses each in the fall and spring semesters.
• Adjunct Lecturer in Studio Art, Painting: ARTS 251 - Beginning Painting, ARTS 299 - Special Topics in Studio Art. This appointment is for one year and will include teaching one class in the fall and spring semesters. The fall course, Beginning Painting, will include instruction of basic color theory and indirect and direct painting techniques in either oil or watercolor paint. The spring course, Special Topics in Studio Art, will include instruction of a topic or method(s) specific to the instructor’s creative practice/research.

Other part-time position in other disciplines may become available. This announcement will be updated as those opportunities become available.

 Minimum Qualifications:

• Adjunct Lecturer/Lecturer, Studio New Media: Terminal degree in studio art, new media, or related field; experience working with video, audio, and digital image making as tools for art making. Experience teaching time-based media to undergraduate students is required. Candidates should have working knowledge of histories and theories of time-based art and media (including some combination of contemporary art, cinema, new media, design, sound art, music). Candidates should possess a demonstrated record of professional accomplishments and be in dialogue with contemporary discourse, particularly as it relates to practice or pedagogy. An excellent working knowledge of appropriate software is required.
• Lecturer in Graphic Design: Terminal degree in graphic design, or related field; experience working with digital image-making, graphic communication, and design research. Experience teaching graphic design-related courses to undergraduate students is required. Candidates should have a working knowledge of theories and practice of graphic design. Candidates should possess a demonstrated record of professional accomplishments and be in dialogue with contemporary discourse, particularly as it relates to design practice or pedagogy. Excellent working knowledge of appropriate software is required.
• Adjunct Lecturer in Studio Art, Painting: BFA or Terminal Degree in Studio , painting of related field; experience teaching painting to undergraduate students is required.

Preferred Qualifications (All Positions):

Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience in a field relevant to the intended field of instruction. A record of accomplishments in practice or in the profession and in dialog with contemporary discourse in the discipline, particularly as relates to practice or pedagogy.

Salary

Salary will be commensurate with rank and experience.

Proposed Starting Dates:

9-month appointments: August 16, 2022

Fall-semester appointments: August 16, 2022

Spring-semester appointments: January 1, 2023
