This position, which has a split portfolio, will be charged with foster community among the Multiracial students (including Multi/Biracial, Multiethnic, and Transracial Adoptees) and Native American Indian/Indigenous students, serving as an advocate for the needs of these communities. This position is responsible for providing leadership in advancing cross-cultural learning initiatives for the larger UMD student community through the MICA office. The coordinator will supervise the Graduate Assistant for Multiracial / Multiethnic Student Involvement & Advocacy and the Graduate Assistant for Native American / Indigenous Student Involvement & Advocacy. 
Specifically, this role will: 

    Serve as an advocate for the needs of Multiracial students (including Multi/Biracial, Multiethnic, and Transracial Adoptees) and Native American Indian/Indigenous students and promote their intellectual, personal, social, leadership, and identity development. Guide students to explore self-awareness and a sense of identity in order to create courageous and supportive conversations on campus about strengths, difficulties, lived experiences, values, stigmas, community issues and more. Encourage students to co-learn and engage across differences.  Advise student organizations and leaders from these communities and encourage their involvement in campus life and leadership development opportunities. This advising support includes, but is not limited to, the Multiracial Biracial Student Association (MBSA), American Indian Student Union (AISU), and Cross-Cultural Adoptees (CCA) organization on campus. Cultivate spaces and programs to affirm cultural heritages, create community healing, and promote community care for students to contribute to the campus and world around them. Develop, implement and/or support programmatic initiatives that foster learning about diversity and multiculturalism and its relationship to leadership development both within and across identity-based student groups by collaborating with staff within MICA office as well as across campus units and departments.  Co-manage administrative tasks related to assessment, MICA website updates, TERPLink (UMD-branded Campus Labs), program budgeting (including management of MICA’s two Diversity Initiative Funds available for student organizations: the Middle Eastern Student Initiative Fund and the Cross-Cultural Initiative Fund) and other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required in a field of education, counseling, student affairs, multicultural education or related field. One year of professional and/or two years graduate level experience in Student Affairs work in a University setting is required. The ideal candidate shall possess sound judgment, maturity, sensitivity to the complexities of identity development, and passion for effecting change in dynamic multicultural environments. Experience in developing and implementing programs that promote student learning about identity and difference within the context of a multicultural society is required. Demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.

Preferences: 

Master’s degree required in a field of education, counseling, student affairs, multicultural education or related field. Experience in advising cultural/or identity-based student organizations strongly preferred. Experience and interest in working with students of color, LGBT-identified students, first-generation students, and students with multiple, intersecting identities is strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.

Physical Demands: 

Work takes place in both an office environment and in on-campus buildings; will require ability to travel throughout campus. There may be occasions when the incumbent will need to work outside their normal work shift to accommodate other shifts that exist in the organization for purposes of meetings, training, etc.
