Job Summary

The Head, Collections Strategy acquires and develops the University Library’s collections in collaboration with stakeholders inside and outside the library so that it best serves the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) community. Oversees the collection lifecycle for print and electronic resources and ensures that each resource is successfully acquired, optimally described, discoverable, and remains accessible. Assists in the analysis of the effectiveness of and establishes future direction for functional policies and programs. A primary duty is the management of other managers, professionals, and support staff.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Works with the Associate Dean, librarians, and Technical Services in long-term planning, strategic alignment, and management oversight of the development and sustaining of the print and electronic collections at FGCU Library.
  • Participates in the strategic planning for Collections and assists in developing and implementing the overall departmental strategic plan.
  • Establishes performance goals and measures to evaluate success of the acquisition and development of collections.
  • Assesses existing and develops new or modified policies and procedures in support of acquisitions and cataloging best practices, to ensure that departmental practices meet both short and long-term objectives.
  • Supervises a team of employees, faculty and staff positions, provides departmental direction and oversight, mentors individual employees, fosters a productive team and ensures a cycle of continuous improvement.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all programs, activities, and series comply with university, state, and federal regulations.
  • Proactively collaborates with stakeholders to ensure that the collection is discoverable and accessible to the FGCU community.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • American Library Association accredited Master’s degree in Library Science.
  • Three years of professional full-time library and/or higher education experience.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with a modern library services platform; experience with Ex Libris Alma preferred.
  • Experience with technical services, resource, and budget management in an academic library setting.
  • Experience training and supervising others.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with project management.
  • Established record of productive relationships with vendors.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in acquisitions, cataloging, subscriptions management, and collection maintenance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge and understanding of management principles, practices, and standards, as applied to public institutions.
  • Knowledge of best practices in resource acquisition, description, and subscriptions management.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data.
  • Skill in examining and evaluating operations and developing and/or redesign operating strategies, systems, and procedures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff.
  • Ability and skill in data analysis and metrics.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes equity and inclusion.
