Summary
SUMMARY : Serve as Head Coach for the Intercollegiate Athletic sport assigned to individual or groups at California Baptist University by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate workers. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  1. Understand and agree to abide by the mission of CBU and the CBU Athletics Department.
  2. Instruct athletes with sound principles and expert skill in skills, training, and strategies to achieve success.
  3. Has knowledge of game rules and Conference/ NCAA regulations and implements these rules on a consistent basis.
  4. Students will receive instruction and spiritual guidance that will lead to positive values, acceptable behavior, and self-discipline consistent with the philosophy of athletics at CBU .
  5. Motivate the team for maximum performance by utilizing motivational philosophies that meet the needs of the students and that are consistent with the CBU Athletic Program philosophy.
  6. Assigns assistant coaches’ specific duties, supervises the assignments and completes proper evaluation at the end of season.
  7. Within the framework of CBU and NCAA policies, recruit prospective student-athletes who are of the level necessary to be successful academically and athletically.
  8. Display good sportsmanship in relationships with students, staff, officials, and opponents as consistent with NCAA policies regarding the principle of sportsmanship and ethical conduct.
  9. Maintain up-to-date information on sports regulations, rule changes, and NCAA policies.
  10. Responsible for submission of yearly budget to Athletic Director and keeping current on all team expenditures to ensure compliance with team budget.
  11. Maintain and submit all required conference and NCAA lists, forms, and records on time as instructed by Compliance Office.
  12. Develops in each athlete respect for University property and its care.
  13. Works with the Athletic Director in setting goals and objectives for the Athletic Department
  14. Assists in the recruitment and selection of staff personnel and in the development of roles and responsibilities.
  15. Effectively manage time in a demanding work environment.
  16. Respond to all administrative correspondence in the requested timeframe and attend all staff meetings.
  17. Adhere to all institutional, conference, and NCAA by-laws and regulations.
  18. Ensure the physical, emotional, and social welfare of student-athletes.
  19. Establish and ensure a safe environment for student-athletes.
Supervisory Responsibilities
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES : Directly supervises Athletic Assistant coaches and other Athletic leaders. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.   • Knowledge of coaching methods.
  • Ability to travel, including domestic/international air travel, and work nights/weekends and holidays.
  • Able to be a positive representative of the University at all times.
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Responsible for adherence of all assistant coaches to all Conference and NCAA rules and bylaws.
  • Effectively arrange home and away contests according to conference and NCAA requirements and submit travel paperwork and NCAA pass lists on time.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and speaking and hearing ability sufficient to communicate in person or over the phone. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT : The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment could be moderate to loud. Education and/or Experience
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE : Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; and one to two years related experience and training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Secondary level athletic experience preferred. Previous coaching experience at high school or NCAA level preferred.
