Gettysburg College, in historic Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is seeking a full-time Class Advisor to work for the Center for Student Success. Gettysburg College is a highly selective, residential undergraduate liberal arts college, which enrolls approximately 2,600 students.  This position reports to the Dean of Student Success.

 

The Class Advisor is responsible for the development and campus-wide coordination of a comprehensive onboarding experience for incoming students including the development of a summer, virtual engagement series and an on-campus orientation program that complements the academic experience. This position is also responsible for ongoing support and guidance for a class year of students through their time at Gettysburg.

The Class Advisor:

  • Provides leadership and campus level coordination to all partners involved in the development and implementation of communications, programs, events, and activities related to the Orientation Program (including virtual, summer programs and the in-person 4 ½ day campus program).
  • Advises students in one class through their time at Gettysburg College (i.e., Class of 2026)
  • Provides advising/counseling to individual students and make counseling referrals when appropriate.
  • Provides guidance to the Lincoln Scholars program
  • Performs a variety of administrative tasks including attending regular meetings within the Academic Affairs and College Life divisions and participating in related college and division planning committees and work groups.
  • Partners with Residential Education to coordinate staff selection and training processes for Orientation staff members.
  • Partners with Residential Education to deliver an extended orientation program.
  • Implements assessment tools in order to gain utilization data that will drive improvements to the Orientation program and overall student experiences with transitions.
  • Creates effective liaison relationships with all campus constituents in the spirit of best supporting students’ success and eventual graduation.
  • Partners with the Provost’s Office to prepare and support faculty workshops as needed.
  • Supervises student employees including those who work in the Center for Student Success and Orientation Leaders, including the selection, training, development, and evaluation/performance reviews of the employees.

 

A Master’s degree in Counseling, Student Affairs, Higher Education or related field is preferred, or, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. At least two to three years’ experience in direct experience in the development and implementation of orientation programs, academic support services, campus-wide programs, etc. is preferred. Successful candidates should possess excellent interpersonal relationship, communication, and social media skills, in addition to a genuine desire and ability to work with and relate to students. The following demonstrated abilities are required to successfully perform the duties of the position:  handle a variety of tasks simultaneously with a close attention to detail; prioritize multiple work demands; strong organizational skills, provide excellent customer service;  handle confidential and private information in the appropriate manner; work with detailed information on a consistent basis; maintain a high level of accuracy in communications; think and react appropriately to a variety of circumstances; be flexible with changing needs of the office, be a team player but able to work independently; learn new computer software applications with ease; work effectively in a stressful environment; work with high volumes of electronic mail in an appropriate manner.  Excellent written and verbal communication abilities are essential, with a demonstrated knowledge of proper grammar and usage.
