Along with teaching, and service responsibilities, this position provides oversight for Field Education. The Director of Field Education position requires candidates to demonstrate a student-centered professional focus, a strong commitment to social work education, experience with field training, and dedication to social work values and ethics. Candidates must also have professional experience collaborating in a team environment and demonstrate a strong work ethic.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain agency placement criteria
  • Ensure agencies provide appropriate learning experiences for students
  • Oversee and monitor student field placement performance to ensure timely and appropriate student placements
  • Oversee and monitor the performance of field placement agencies, as well as review all affiliation agreements, coordinate the renewal of said agreements, make site visits to field placement agencies, and develop new field agency placement sites
  • Provide oversight for all background screening, as well as ensure compliance with all field application procedures, review and make recommendations (as needed) for field placements, and ensure the establishment, monitoring, and confidential maintenance of background screening records
  • Develop and implement field related policies in collaboration with Social Work faculty and the department chairperson
  • Actively participate in the design of the Social Work Program curriculum, the evaluation procedures of the Program, and the development of academic policies
  • Oversee the implementation and quality of field orientation for students, agencies, field liaisons, and field instructors
  • Maintain current data regarding the status of students in field placement, as well as ensure the consistent monitoring of all records of students in field education to support compliance with Program, agency procedures, and recording standards
  • Oversee the timely and accurate preparation and updating of field educational manuals, forms, and procedures as approved by the Social Work Program faculty
  • Teach undergraduate courses across the BSW social work curriculum according to workload assignments
  • Engage in departmental and university service
  • Serve as academic advisor to Social Work Program students


  • Required Qualifications

    • Master's in Social Work (MSW) from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program (Degree must be from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited/government certified university.)
    • Ph.D. in Social Work or a directly related field is a plus
    • Current active Missouri social work license or current eligibility for Missouri licensure; a current clinical social work license (LCSW) is a plus
    • Minimum of two years full-time post-MSW direct practice experience, with at least two years of direct practice experience in the Southeast Missouri region
    • Experience or knowledge in teaching at the college/university level as a graduate assistant, part-time instructor, or full-time faculty
    • Experience or interest in teaching across the undergraduate social work curriculum
    • Demonstrated commitment to work with students, staff, and community (e.g., advising, organizations, training, boards, leadership)
    • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community
    • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multicultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities
