Essential Functions (Job Duties)
Provides the leadership, management and vision necessary to ensure that the Provost's Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development has the proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and people systems in place to ensure operating efficiency. Reports to Senior Associate Provost of Faculty Affairs.
Serves as the Administrative Officer and Project Manager for the Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development. Monitors and approves expenditures related to Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development events.
Coordinates and directs the efficient operations of the office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development, including but not limited to Academic Human Resources administration and redesigning processes and operations to meet changing faculty and academic staff needs.
Provides oversight and assists Senior Associate Provost of Faculty Affairs with management, grievance related, and legal activities including offer letters, contracts, grievance decision letters, disciplinary actions, and other legal documents.
Works with office personnel to train college and/or departmental staff and administrators in the faculty appointment/renewal/and promotion and tenure process in individual and group settings.
Assists Senior Associate Provost of Faculty Affairs in the interpretation and administration of all three academic union contracts (American Association of University Professors, Graduate Employees' Organizing Committee, and Union of Part Time Faculty).
Provides overall leadership and direction to staff. Sets expectations & focus, assigns duties, delegates responsibilities, evaluates activities, prepares performance appraisals & professional development plans. Provides coaching, mentoring and teaching.
Manages the administrative process for assigned staff including hiring, promotions, terminations, disciplinary procedures, and and salary adjustments. Provides ongoing performance feedback, goal setting, and development plans for staff. Plans for future staffing needs. Provides timely communications to staff.
Assists Senior Associate Provost of Faculty Affairs with the monitoring and completion of college and center reviews.
Performs liaison function between the office of Faculty Affairs & Faculty Development and the Deans, Department Chairs, and Unit Directors, ensuring compliance with University academic policies, procedures and contractual requirements.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Unique Duties
Qualifications
Education Bachelor's degree
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Business, Human Resources, Labor Relations, or related field from an accredited college or university. A Master's degree is preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)
Requires 5 or more years experience in a business management or Human Resources leadership role. Requires business management and strategic planning experience, with a proven record of developing and managing large scale projects. Higher education experience is preferred. Prior experience with Wayne State University financial and human resource systems is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Requires specialized technical knowledge of one or more human resource functions, e.g., academic employment selection and recruitment, affirmative action/equal employment opportunity, labor relations, etc. in order to provide strategic consultative services to University academic units and their employees.
Ability to listen and respond effectively to customer questions and resolve customer problems.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills in order to communicate effectively with all levels of faculty and staff.
Effective interpersonal and customer service skills, including ability to build and maintain effective relationships with customers at all levels, including senior executives. Demonstrates a high level of professional integrity, ethics and confidentiality.
Effective analytical problem solving abilities. Ability to identify and resolve problems, develop alternative approaches and meet challenges with resourcefulness.
Ability to establish priorities independently to meet deadlines, complete work processes and make decisions. Ability to apply basic business knowledge to improve operations.
Ability to challenge conventional practices, adapt established methods for new uses, and implement process improvements. Creates novel solutions to problems; evaluates new technology as potential solutions to existing problems.
Requires knowledge of the University's organizational structure as well as an extensive knowledge of academic personnel policies and procedures and federal and state laws regarding employment practices.
Proficient in the use of Human Resources Banner application, On-line Hiring System, Smarthpath, and Microsoft Office tools including Excel, Word and Outlook.
