Job Summary

Oversee and coordinate running the Urban Education Initiative’s signature afterschool program, Project Coach. Project Coach is the Smith-designed youth development program staffed by Smith students that uses sports as the medium to enhance the education, health, and general wellbeing of its participants. Develop and promote initiatives supporting inclusion, equity and mental health within the athletics and recreation department. Create programming and foster support for student-athletes, coaches and graduate student assistant coaches. Collaborate across campus with key stakeholders to increase and improve campus climate.Take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Essential Functions

PROJECT COACH
  • Oversee and coordinate sport and youth development programming in Project Coach. Work in collaboration with the UEI Director and the Athletics Department to develop, organize, and deliver the Project Coach curriculum.
  • Lead the implementation and monitoring of the Quality Assurance and Compliance measures designed to ensure continuous improvement of Project Coach.
  • Supervise and train Project Coach staff including teachers, assistant coaches, graduate students and undergraduates
  • Coordinate programming with the school district. including training of teachers, managing relationships with Central Office, and school principals
  • Lead the development of training materials and professional development for sharing the Project Coach model
  • Coordinate the sports programming for elementary students that are run by Project Coach adolescents.
  • Lead and Coordinate special projects that involve Smith students and Project Coach children and youth. These include international projects, media projects, special events, field days, family nights.
  • Assist with the development of Community Partnerships based on programmatic needs.
  • Work in collaboration with the UEI Director and the Athletics Department to develop and implement the training and technical assistance calendar needed among the different levels of mentorship within Project Coach.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures designed to ensure the efficiency, safety and impact of Project Coach at each site. This includes those related to Risk Assessment, recruitment and enrollment, program plans and calendars.
  • Develop and implement metrics and tools to measure program success.
ATHLETICS SUPPORT
  • Develop programs designed to investigate the equity and inclusion support needs of athletes and the greater Smith student body. Work with other campus offices to extrapolate lessons from Athletics and apply to campus as a whole, including the Office of Equity and Inclusion, Office of Disability Services, Mwangi Cultural Center, Wurtele Center for Leadership and the Deans' Office.
  • Position Athletics as a catalyst for diversity across the rest of campus.Conceptualize, develop and implement student leadership and inclusion training programs to prepare undergraduate students and graduate assistants as reflective, inclusive leaders.Help to continue to foster a sense of community and welcoming for current and prospective students of color.
  • Be a resource for athletes, coaches, administrators, and graduate assistants on aspects of athlete life, including, but not limited to, equity and inclusion, health and wellness, leadership, psychology, and mental skills.Give workshops related to equity and inclusion, allyship, team cohesion, difficult conversations, and other topics related to equity and inclusion and student life.
  • Support projects such as installing the previous Red Lining exhibit from Neilson into Ainsworth and otherwise highlighting aspects of race and culture within Ainsworth.Conduct yearly education and training for student-athletes, coaches and administrators on inclusion and mental health support best practices.
  • Develop Orientation programming in these areas for first year and transfer student-athletes.
  • Oversight of graduate assistant coaches consisting of regular meetings and programming throughout the year.
  • Serve as the department liaison to SCID (Smith College Inclusion and Diversity Group). Assist in the coordination and planning for the AMP program (Athletics Multicultural Program). Serve as the liaison between the Schacht Health Center and student-athletes to support all mental health challenges.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

Master’s degree with 3-5 years of experience in youth development programs and coaching experience on a high school or college level, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a supervisory capacity in a sports-based youth development program that focused on developing academic and community leadership skills in underserved youth. Experience in non-profit administration and leadership. Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Excellent leadership, oral and written communication skills; ability to facilitate meetings, develop action plans, and supervise staff. Must possess a strong understanding of both the theory and practice of sports-based youth development. Significant experience in working with children and youth in out-of-school programs in diverse communities. Spanish speaking is a plus. Must have a proven record of successful work with adolescents and have intermediate/advanced knowledge and skill in coaching in soccer and basketball. Must have or be willing to be certified in coaching, sports, first aid and CPR.
