Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Wheaton College, in Norton, Massachusetts seeks applicants for a nine-month, full time, non-tenure track position as Artist-in-Residence in Technical Theatre, beginning in the Fall of 2022. Our new colleague will join four other full-time faculty teaching practice-based courses centered around performance and production. The position will offer the possibility of renewal, following successful annual evaluation, and will also offer access to funding for faculty research.

The Artist in Residence will teach three courses (two sections of Stagecraft, one section of Introduction to Lighting Design) per year, and fill 3 course equivalencies. These equivalencies involve facilitating scenic construction for one faculty-directed play per year and lighting and sound for one faculty-directed dance concert per year. This Artist in Residence will construct scenery, hang and focus lighting, manage inventories, maintain facilities and equipment, and purchase specific materials needed for production. The candidate chosen will oversee the work of students in scenic construction, specialty property construction, lighting, sound, media and stage management.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field with commensurate sustained professional experience in Technical Direction
  • Demonstrated ability to address the educational and cultural needs of students and to advance equity, diversity and inclusion in the field. Knowledge of and commitment to contemporary issues of inclusion, social justice, diversity, access, and equity in higher education and theatre
  • Demonstrated knowledge of stage production practices and processes including: carpentry (basic and advanced stagecraft) methods and techniques, lighting instruments and sound equipment, theatrical rigging, rehearsal processes, collaborative processes
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Vectorworks, AutoCAD or other related software
  • Demonstrated excellence in organization skills and project management, including budgeting and production paperwork
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and professional output in the fields of Lighting Design and Technical Direction
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MFA in technical direction or related field.
  • Record of at least five years of professional and relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrated skills in metal fabrication
  • Experience with 3-D printers and computerized routers
  • Demonstrated and ongoing engagement with current entertainment technology practices
  • Skill in implementing projection for production
  • Significant professional experience working as a Technical Director and/ or Scene Shop Supervisor
  • Experience supervising student workers
  • Prior experience working within a higher education setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA Laws and Regulations
  • Experience with motorized lifts
  • Experience mentoring students in stage management
