Outdoor Pursuits Coordinator

Job Summary

Recreation Services at the University of Colorado (CU) Boulder encourages applications for the Outdoor Pursuits Coordinator position! This position, under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Outdoor Pursuits, is responsible for administering the Outdoor Pursuits Trips program and Equipment Rental Center, including on-site instructional courses, single and multi-day off-site trips, equipment management, adventure resource center, and other initiatives within Outdoor Pursuits and the Department of Recreation Services. The Outdoor Pursuits Coordinator supervises 2 student coordinators and 25+ student and non-student hourly employees.

This is a professional exempt full-time position reporting to the Assistant Director of Outdoor Pursuits, within the Department of Recreation Services. The purpose of Outdoor Pursuits is to provide opportunities for physical and social interaction, student development, student employment, safe-risk taking, skill development, environmental awareness, and ultimately a healthier University community.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Program Administration

• Budget
• Develop and manage revenue and expenditure budget for the trips program and equipment rental center.
• Risk Management
• Supervise risk management including developing and updating risk management policies and procedures for the trips program in accordance with current best industry standards, in partnership with Rec Risk Management.
• Permitting
• Obtain and manage public land permits for adventure trips through various land management agencies and locations.
• Assessment
• Evaluate courses, trips, and related programs, and rental center operations.
• Point of Sale
• Maintain the Fusion point of sale system for trip registrations and equipment rentals.
• Marketing
• Oversee Promotion and marketing for courses, trips, and related programs in partnership with Student Affairs Communication.

Program Operation

• Program Planning and Delivery
• Develop instructional curriculum and trip plans for a variety of Outdoor Pursuits trip offerings.
• Oversee and ensure safe operation of trips and courses, supervise trip leaders, and ensure a high quality program delivery.
• Program Development
• Develop and implement new adventure programming.
• Evaluate trip offerings and update or add as needed, explore possible international opportunities, and expand successful Incoming Student Trips program.
• Trip Leading
• Provide on-call support for trips in the field, and provide direct instruction and leadership for courses and trips when appropriate, including nights and weekends.
• Serve as Recreation representative for CU Bike Program through Environmental Center partnering on trips, clinics and classes.

Facility Management

• Facilities
• Oversee Rental Center, gear storage, and Adventure Resource Center.
• Equipment
• Coordinate inventory, maintenance, and replacement of all equipment and supplies.
• Vehicles
• Serve as the lead for Outdoor Pursuits in coordinating use and maintenance of Rec Center vehicles, including maintaining CMV certification and coordinating certification for staff, in partnership with Rec Services Facilities and CU Transportation Services.

Employee Supervision

• Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate all trip leader and rental center staff, including student coordinator positions.
• Training
• Develop curriculum and provide instruction for in-house staff training, coordinate outside trainers when appropriate, and maintain required documentation on all staff trainings and certifications.
• Support employee development through training, coaching, evaluations, and professional development opportunities.

Outdoor Pursuits Assistance

• Assist Outdoor Pursuits with any needed tasks in the areas of special events, climbing gym, and challenge course.

Rec Services Duties

• Assist in Recreation Services projects, events, and assigned duties, including serving on internal and external committees.

Professional Development

• Maintain certifications in CPR, and WFR (or higher).
• Maintain certification(s) through a nationally recognized accrediting organization, in one or more activity areas, such as rock climbing, paddling, swiftwater rescue, avalanche awareness/rescue, backpacking, leave no trace, outdoor leadership, or others.
• Actively participate in professional organizations, such as AORE (Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education) or WEA (Wilderness Education Association), through conference attendance, professional publications/presentations, and committee membership.
• Take advantage of professional development opportunities offered through Rec Services and campus partners such as HR trainings, workshops, and conferences.

Recreation Program & Facilities Quality Control

• Participate in the development of ideas and suggestions for program and facility improvement.
• Attend Recreation Center classes or programs, and use various facilities and equipment periodically to ensure that they are meeting or exceeding the standards of the department.

• This position is on-site full time and requires some evening and weekend work hours.

What We Can Offer

• The salary range for this position is $46,000 - $48,000.

What We Require

• Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience will substitute on a year-for-year basis.
• Experience leading multi-day backpacking trips.
• Experience in one or more adventure activity areas: paddling, climbing, winter camping, snow sports, fishing, cycling, mountain biking, or other.
• CPR/First Aid/AED, must obtain and maintain within 3 months of employment.
• Current Wilderness First Responder Certification or ability to obtain within 3 months of employment.
• Ability to acquire Commercial Motor Vehicle certification within 6 months of employment including the ability to pass a required physical.

• Excellent risk management judgment.
• Experience planning and leading trips.
• Experience with training, teaching, or instruction.

What We Would Like You To Have

• Current Wilderness First Responder Certification or higher.
• Current certification(s) in one or more activity areas through a nationally recognized accrediting organization, such as AMGA or PCIA single pitch instructor, ACA paddling instructor or swiftwater rescue, AIARE Pro2 avalanche training, PMBI mountain bike instructor, Leave No Trace trainer, or others.
• Experience running a rental center.
• Experience providing trip leader training.
• Experience supervising staff.
