Job Summary: The Director of Collegiate Recovery and Intervention Services oversees and manages the campus programs around substance (mis)use/abuse and recovery.
Additional Department Summary: The
Director of Collegiate Recovery and Intervention Services has
comprehensive responsibility for establishing and maintaining the
overall mission and vision of the department consistent with the
mission of the Division and University. This position is
responsible for providing oversight of all department operations
and managing the day-to-day operations of the department; the
strategic planning and vision for the department; all supervisory
authority of staff and all fiscal resources, including the
management of the department’s budget, and setting priorities for
resource utilization to allow for programs and services that enable
The University of Alabama to become a national leader in campus
intervention and recovery programs.
The Director may provide clinical supervision of all
clinically-related substance abuse activities that affect student
well-being, such as when to refer for further mental health
assessment and counseling. The Director will provide leadership on
developing effective alcohol and substance abuse prevention and
management strategies for recovering students.
The Director is also responsible for all supervisory authority in
the department, including recruitment, hiring, training,
professional development, and evaluation of professional and
support staff, as well as any disciplinary actions.
The Director oversees and serves a highly specific targeted
population within the UA student population, including students who
have violated the Code of Student Conduct specifically related to
alcohol and other drugs, as well as those who have experienced the
impact of substance misuse/abuse, and those students who have met
the challenges of treatment and experienced the rewards of
recovery, and are asking to maintain their commitment with and
through a supportive recovery community. These programs and
students are unique in that there is considerable and consistent
collaboration with various on campus services designed to assist
students in academic success and retention in addition to the
technical clinical processes required.
Responsible for completing required training and promoting a safe,
hospitable, and respectful workplace. Responsible for holding staff
accountable for completion of required training. Has personal
accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for
establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and
controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures.
Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in addiction and recovery science, social work, counseling, counselor education, marriage and family counseling, or psychology and eight (8) years of experience, to include some direct experience working with college/university students within an institution of higher education in the area of intervention or recovery from substance abuse/addiction. Specialized training and experience in the field of recovery and addiction studies (e.g., alcohol/drug use, addiction, and recovery), including primary and secondary prevention strategies and treatment options. Must include experience with emerging or young adults. If in recovery, must have completed seven (7) years in recovery.
Skills and Knowledge: Evidence of progressive job responsibilities, leadership of professional staff, or organization/ planning and program evaluation is required. Highly knowledgeable about addiction, treatment levels, recovery stages, relapse prevention, and components related to sustained recovery is required. Knowledgeable about the intersection of alcohol and sexual assault. Effective communication and interpersonal skills (listening, verbal, written) with a variety of on and off campus constituencies; planning/organizing/ problem solving, reasoning, and creativity; demonstrated knowledge and use of program assessment and evaluation processes. Demonstrated commitment to expand multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills as evidenced through: demonstrating self awareness; understanding and valuing others; demonstrating knowledge of social inequalities; interacting effectively with a diversity of people; fostering equity and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in addiction and recovery science, social work, counseling, counselor education, marriage and family counseling, psychology, or other related degree that provides a foundation of knowledge about addiction and recovery. At least five (5) years of direct or related work experience with evidence of progressive job responsibilities, Direct experience working with college/university students within an institution of higher education in the area of intervention or recovery from substance abuse/addiction. Licensure in the state of Alabama at the level of an independent practitioner (LPC, LMFT, LCSW, clinical psychologist, etc.) or licensed-eligible within the state of Alabama and licensed obtained within one (1) year of hire.
