- Drew University seeks applications for the Director of the
University Writing Center (UWC), an essential student success and
retention resource within the University’s Center for Academic
Excellence (CAE). Reporting to the Associate Provost, the Director
fosters a welcoming workspace for Drew’s community of learners — a
space that supports critical thinking through reading and writing
across the curriculum, where students can engage rigorously with
the writing process and receive guidance and feedback on all types
of written and spoken communication. The Director also serves as a
key member of the CAE leadership team.
In collaboration with colleagues in the CAE, the UWC Director provides leadership for a staff of approximately 80 undergraduate and graduate tutors from a broad range of disciplines. The Director also supports faculty in the teaching of reading and writing, including in-class support programs. The Director’s core responsibilities include:
- Manage day-to day operations of the UWC: Act as the liaison
between tutors, students, and faculty to ensure effective
operations and programs.
- Manage the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of writing
tutors and other student staff who support success initiatives that
are important to the work of the CAE and to Drew’s culture of
writing.
- In collaboration with other CAE staff, provide oversight for
the CRLA tutor training program, including continual assessment and
development of programming to support outcomes for tutor
training.
- Develop programming, including workshops related to academic
integrity standards, for faculty and undergraduate and graduate
students.
- Manage faculty referrals to the UWC and provide direct student
support for a small caseload of at-risk undergraduate and graduate
students.
- In collaboration with other CAE staff, manage tutoring and
related programming budgets.
- Operate the UWC utilizing current best practices and ensure
that students and faculty are aware of the UWC’s programming and
availability.
- Collaborate with staff and faculty from offices and departments
across campus (e.g., International Student Services, the University
Library, the Center for Career Development) on student success
initiatives.
Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in English, Writing, Education, or related discipline.
5-years experience in writing support services at the university level.
Experience with tutoring at-risk populations preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Qualities:
- High ethical standards and impeccable personal integrity;
- Self-motivated capacity to engage in troubleshooting and
strategic/critical thinking;
- Friendly, courteous, and proactive in decision making in a
highly dynamic and diverse university setting;
- Excellent interpersonal capabilities, with strong verbal and
written communication and listening skills and ability to work in a
team environment;
- Clear knowledge of study skills and the ability to promote this
knowledge across content;
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite and Google Workspace.
