The University of Wisconsin-Parkside (UW-Parkside) invites applications for the Director, Center for Research in Innovation and Smart Cities (CRISC) to be the leader of a center with a university-wide, cross-disciplinary focus. Unprecedented opportunities in research and teaching in business, information technology, education, healthcare, government, environment, and transportation have been created in southeast Wisconsin evidenced by Kenosha’s plans to develop an innovation center on the site of the former Chrysler Engine Plant and the commitment of the city of Racine to a smart future through its successful effort as one of five U.S. cities to win the Smart Cities Readiness Challenge. The CRISC director will integrate research and programming with local, state, and national initiatives in the use of technology to increase efficiency of services and the well-being of citizens in the community. CRISC convenes leaders from faculty, higher education, business, information technology, healthcare, government, and civic groups to continue to build a research and training agenda for the center.

Key Job Responsibilities:

Responsibilities and duties of this position include building UW-Parkside’s capacity to attract sponsored research through collaboration with WiSys, the dedicated technology transfer office for the 11 comprehensive universities in the University of Wisconsin System; creating research opportunities for faculty and students; developing teaching and training initiatives, establishing visiting scholar and speaker programs, linking the university to smart cities and innovation professional networks, and helping UW-Parkside further strengthen its leadership role in the region. There is an expectation that the person in this role will teach; the nature and frequency to be determined based on the interests of the university and the successful candidate.

The ideal candidate will effectively connect UW-Parkside to public and private sector leaders, will position the university as a “thinking and strategic planning arm” of regional government, and will have a broad perspective on the political, economic, and social possibilities of smart cities development.

The Director of the CRISC will further the UW System’s 2020 FWD strategic aims to encourage innovation through basic and applied research; expand academic programs in areas needed in the Wisconsin workforce; expand connections with employers to better respond to workforce needs; and provide professional development opportunities to promote creativity and innovation within the university and in the broader community. It is expected that the CRISC will be self-sustaining within five years.

Qualifications:

• The successful candidate will possess a PhD, ideally with exposure to technological development and implementation in their disciplinary area.
• A track record of generating sponsored research.
• Work effectively with academics and professionals from multiple disciplines and sectors.
• Effective teaching experience.
• Demonstrated expertise in smart cities.

Although not required, the successful candidate will have experience with state and local policies in the Midwest, and public educational institutions.
