Position Title

Graduate Assistant- Aquatics

Job Description

The Graduate Assistant will assist in the day-to-day operations of and management of aquatics programming and the Thomas Eagleton Indoor Pool. They will supervise lifeguard staff and program instructors. They will also assist in the department’s risk management and certifications program.

Graduate Assistants receive a $5000 yearly stipend (divided and paid monthly for 10 months). August – May. Graduate Assistants also receive up to 9 graduate credit hours paid tuition per semester based on program selection (note: Graduate Assistants will be required to remain in good academic standing as they proceed through their selected program).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
  • Provide oversight to the Thomas Eagleton Indoor Pool, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment is maintained.
  • Conduct daily inspections of the pool, deck, mechanical room, and patio.
  • Assist in the management of programs, included but not limited to: swim lessons; certifications; event planning.
  • Assist with program area marketing needs and requests.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the aquatics area. Assist in the training, scheduling, and evaluation of lifeguards.
  • Know the procedures for purchasing, acquiring bids and receiving gifts through foundations.
  • Help with equipment purchases.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Recreation Services.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must be able to handle a high workload in a demanding environment and be well organized; excellent interpersonal skills; and the ability to work independently.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Must be accepted and enrolled into the Missouri Western State University graduate program.
  • Two years of experience within campus recreation or aquatics programming preferred.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Must be able to assert authority to peers, faculty, staff and community members.
  • Must be able to communicate ideas to others.
  • Must be willing to learn all rules, regulations, policies and procedures concerned with the Recreation Services Department.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification (or willing to obtain).
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification (or willing to obtain).
  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification (or willing to obtain).
