MMC6936: Measuring Social Change: Research and Evaluation

Course Description:

This course will teach students how to identify insights that drive outcomes and impact organizations. Measuring and evaluating communications and engagement activities impact and highlight the objectives of an organization. Measurement and evaluation are how smart organizations learn, improve, and succeed and is instrumental to any organization.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Explain measurement terminology. (CO: 1)
  • Explain how communications and public interest communication approaches contribute to an organization’s objectives and goals. (CO: 2)
  • Identify measurement and evaluation techniques. (CO: 3)
  • Formulate measurable objectives. (CO: 4)
  • Discriminate meaningful metrics from vanity metrics. (CO: 5)
  • Develop measurable actions within the PESO model (paid, earned, shared, owned). (CO: 6)
  • Identify measurement tools for research and data mining. (CO: 7)
  • Enhance a communications campaign for measuring impact. (CO: 8)
  • Explain big data. (CO: 9)
  • Outline communications measurement metrics. (CO: 10)
  • Identify measurable metrics for post-campaign reports. (CO: 11)
  • Create measurement reports and dashboards. (CO: 12)
  • Audit data sources, tools, and industry benchmarks. (CO: 13)

  • Develop a measurement plan. (CO: 15)
  • Evaluate the convergence of media and the changing communications landscape. (CO: 16)

    Basic Instructor Expectations:

    The ideal candidate will be available to act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) during July and early August to make some adjustments to this existing course. This includes the addition of more Public Interest Communication focused content and recording of new lectures. This revised course should be ready to teach for the Fall 2022 semester (Classes start August 24). The candidate/SME should then be available to teach this course in the Fall 2022 and future semesters.
    • Prepare all course materials prior to the start of each semester.
    • Meet Quality Assurance standards for course design.
    • Take ownership of course material and make updates to content and assignments to ensure the information is current and accurate.
    • Proactively engage with students throughout each week through meaningful activities that promote student academic growth.
    • Engage with students in a professional and respectful manner. Promote a positive learning environment.
    • Provide individualized, supportive and meaningful assignment feedback to further student learning.
    • Provide students with clear assignment expectations including directions, rubrics and samples if necessary.
    • Reply to student and staff inquiries within 48 hours.
    • Grade all student work within 10-days of the assignment’s due date or within 10-days of the submission date if the assignment was submitted late.

    The College of Journalism and Communications has 74 full-time faculty members, 87 full-time staff and approximately 500 other classifications including but not limited to: Graduate Assistants, Post-Doc Associates, Adjunct Instructors, Student Assistants, and Other Personnel Services (OPS).

    Expected Salary:

    Commensurate with experience.

    Minimum Requirements:

    Master's degree and 3 years of experience.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    3 years professional experience in a directly related field (preferably working in the non-profit / Public Interest Communication space).

    5+ years professional experience preferred.

    3 years teaching experience in higher education.

    Online and/or graduate level teaching experience a plus.

    Experience with Canvas LMS preferred.
